"Big Red" Retires
I would be really surprised if any of you knew who "Big Red" is. The first time I recall ever seeing "Big Red" was a hot summer night in 1983 in a San Diego community called Logan Heights. It was following a drive-by shooting outside Mullin's liquor Store at 30th and Imperial Ave, a famous gathering spot for street gang members. One of many locations where death often came quickly after flashes of gunfire in the course of confrontations between, "crips" and "bloods". The same neighborhood where gang members would hide between dilapidated homes and yell out, "one time" or whistle to alert other criminal elements that "five-oh" was approaching.
As I turned the corner in a marked patrol car and rolled past the
crime scene, I could see the lab technicians cameras temporarily lighting up the desolate landscape and the figure of a body on the sidewalk. At about that time, a call for cover came out only a few blocks away. A UC, (undercover unit) was in foot pursuit of an armed gang member. It was, "Big Red". Once anyone ever saw his dashing figure, he was easy to recognize. At 6'4" and weighing about 240 lbs with long reddish blond curly hair he stuck out like a lighthouse on a foggy night. The hawaiian shirts and Levis he would frequently wear was always a nice touch and confirmed it was him. No body armor, only a snub nosed revolver tucked into his waistband. He was always a real cop's cop. I had heard many great stories about, "Big Red" long before I actually met him that evening.
In those early years of patrol work, SDPD was the most dangerous police department in the country. It was during the hot summer nights in a violent neighborhood where you fought to bring peace to a community immersed in violence. It was the tough fabric for the start of a thirty year friendship that led us each to being the godfather's for each others sons. "Big Red's" real name is David Johnson. He was both the best and also the most gentle cop, detective, or sergeant I have ever known in my career with SDPD.
On Saturday night, Theresa, Jeanne Duncan, (our office manager) and her husband, Jim Duncan, (retired SDPD Homicide Lt.) relaxed at homicide Sergeant's Dave Johnson's retirement party at the Beachcomber bar in South Mission Beach. The same bar Dave was a bouncer before joining the ranks of America's Finest. In that beer soaked bar were about seventy-five to one hundred police officers, detectives and a little brass. The low-key culmination honoring someone we all held in such high esteem was incredible.
It was probably the best cop retirement party I have ever been to. No long speeches, no promotion-minded people kissing up to supervisors. Theresa and I were with real police legends. It was a humbling experience. If I named the countless murders many of them had solved, you would know the names of the victims. The environment just felt really comfortable. It was not the many 9mm's or other handguns hidden under sweatshirts that was comforting, nor the open bar tab and the, (CABS) Carne asada burritos, (but all of those things certainly helped).
It was knowing that throughout those years, we all had watched each other's backs and grew up together. I saw so many friends including Debbie and her husband Tom Rizzo, who is currently a patrol Sgt. at Northern Division. Tom had steadied a nervous young SWAT Officer named Ray Shay on his first SWAT entry into a tiny home off of Euclid Ave. In about 1987 when a psychotic, mountain of a man, with a hatchet was holding his entire family hostage. Those are times and places you never forget.
(Me and "Big Red" in about 1990. If you were a cop then you of course needed to have a mustache).
SDPD and the City of San Diego were fortunate to have "Big Red" for so many years. We were blessed to have him then as well as now. He pulled the retirement pin at the right time. He needs to coach some more football.
Dave will likely not be getting a, "Happy Retirement" card from the countless families he helped in those "rougher" neighborhoods. The working class apartments and homes without garages and no home owners associations. Where the intimidating sound of a low flying police helicopter with a high intensity spotlight cutting through the darkness of your backyard is commonplace.
So Dave, this is your personal e-card we are sharing with you and about a thousand or so other families. They needed to hear about you. After all they all have HOA's and most of them have never had a beer with a real police legend. Congratulations to you, your amazing wife Kim and your great sons, David and Brian.
You sacrificed so much for so many people that don't have the ability or opportunity to say thank you. So we will do it for them. Enjoy your retirement! Two, one, five, zero, out.
Enjoy your week,
