Stop for Tacos!
When loosing is winning.....
The daily plea from two of our sons, Ryan and Raymond after picking them up from elementary school each day is usually the same, "Can we stop for Jack in the Box tacos?" "No, not today" has been my standard response. I have evaded saying when the "right day" for tacos will come. I held this position for the entire school year until this past Friday when I crumbled like a cheap over-cooked taco that scatters to the floor of our Honda Element. I had a good reason. The day was about loosing and winning.
When I was a junior in high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I had heard that a little league baseball team could not play that year because there was not a parent who would coach the team. I spoke up, (to my parents astonishment) saying I would coach and manage the team. They were only ten year old boys, but they were great, well-behaved kids. Good season! Incredible boys, and only about one rummy parent. What sticks out in my mind most were those boys and (at the end of the season), my father.
I remember loosing a critical game in the playoffs and I felt at the time as if the weight of the world was on my shoulders. I had lost. I let the team down. I should have pitched Timmy instead of Joey. I was out-coached. I was a loser. My dad insisted I was not a loser and neither was the team. I did not fully understand what he meant until this week.
See, I had dropped Raymond off earlier in the day to finish up his last day of campaigning for president of his elementary school student body. He even made one poster that was battery powered which would lite up his platform of being a leader, creative, enthusiastic, caring, and friendly. No mention of deficit spending in this political campaign!
When I dropped him off at school, I parked in the parking lot for a few minutes and surveilled him. As he greeted every kid arriving in his grade he would give each of them a high five or shake their hand. With unbridled enthusiasm, I could see he was telling each of them, "Hi, I'm Raymond. I need your vote. I am running for president".
As our car inched forward to pick him up at the end of the school day, I could see the restraint in his eyes. I knew right away. He felt he had failed. As he dropped his backpack at his feet he quietly hung his head and said softly, "I didn't win. I didn't get elected". I vainly tried to explain he had actually won a great deal and gained experience by being a finalist and by giving a speech to the entire school. I told him he had really stepped up to the challenge. He looked up at me and said, "Yeah dad, but I'm still a loser".
That was when I thought back many years ago when my dad could not convince me either but he obviously had a grasp on the all illusive, "Big Picture". That view you get when your quite a bit older and have lost lots of times. You can actually win by losing. I remember when I asked my father about a year later, why he cosigned on a loan for my first car. He replied, "Simple, really. You coached that little league team". I probably thought, "whatever" at that time. I was just so excited to get that used beat up camaro. Now, I know better. You really can win by losing.
As I pulled away from the school curb, I told Raymond, in our book, he had won! Theresa and I were very proud of him. I proclaimed in a loud voice as if I was buying beers for everyone at McGills, "Jack in the Box tacos for everyone!" Our neighbor's daughter, Jenna who car pools with us was as excited as our boys. Not a bad way to reinforce to your children to take risks. After all, it was only three bucks for six tacos! Thanks Jack! Now that's a real win!
We hope you have a winning week!

This Week in Residential Real Estate

IVY GATE HOMES ARE HOT!!
Limited inventory and a unique product means upward pressure on the market. It is not a surprise o us that live and work in 92127 that Ivy Gate homes are selling within hours of hitting the market.
Latest example this past week was when a single level short sale went contingent sight un-seen with back up offers behind it within hours of hitting the market.
It emphasizes that Ivy Gate is going no where but UP and you need a professional in your corner that knows the local market. There are several excellent realtors in our area. CAll them or us but use an area expert. It can mean the diferrence between getting the home you dreamed of or not.
If you or someone you know is interested in buying or selling, give us a call. Our Team is never too busy for your referrals! We are also experts in lender approved short sales! |
