Hydrologic and Environmental Systems Analysis: A New Framework for Improved Site Conceptualization and Decision Making
Pioneered by Integral scientist Dr. Ken Kolm, Hydrologic and Environmental Systems Analysis (HESA) is a structured approach used to conceptualize and characterize relevant features of hydrologic and environmental systems. Employing HESA leads to more accurate and defensible technical analyses, which in turn lead to more focused and cost-effective project strategies and improved decision making.
"I developed the systems approach because I care about the environment," says Kolm, "but at the same time it is a practical way for companies to save money by planning ahead and using integrated data in a new way." Read the full article>>

Integral scientists have developed software to apply a powerful but rarely used numerical technique to environmental investigations, in ways that provide a robust quantification of potential contributions of chemical sources at contaminated sites. Known as unmixing analysis, this mathematical technique has produced effective results by providing strong lines of evidence for estimating the relative contribution of different sources to site contaminants. New Approaches Used to Maximize Ecological Benefits of Restoration
Integral scientists are developing landscape-based approaches to restoration planning that can be used to maximize the ecological benefits of restoration efforts. We have already applied the approach to a case study to assist in restoration planning in the Delaware River Estuary watershed in New Jersey and are incorporating these tools into restoration planning to address Natural Resource Damage liabilities under CERCLA. Toxicology: Integral Reviews Proposed Toxicological Criteria on Dioxin, PAHs, and PCBs
If you need information on the latest advances in regulatory toxicology, Integral scientists have a proven track record of conducting comprehensive, scientifically sound evaluations. Recent activities and those underway include the review and preparation of critical comments on EPA's Reanalysis of Key Issues Related to Dioxin Toxicity and Response to NAS Comments on the Dioxin Reassessment, released May 21; EPA's Development of a Relative Potency Factor (RPF) Approach for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) Mixtures, released on February 26; and EPA's Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), released on April 7. Portland's Integral Consulting Receives Zipcar's "Wheels of Change" Award
Integral Consulting has been recognized by Zipcar's first annual Portland "Wheels of Change" award for the firm's dedication to improving the sustainability of their business practices and reducing its carbon footprint. Key to winning this award was the variety of incentives offered by Integral to employees, aimed at reducing the number of single passenger car commuters. As part of the award, Integral Consulting received $1,000 in Zipcar driving credit.
"Integral Consulting has shown that by using a mix of alternative transportation options, they can not only conduct business efficiently, but cut costs and reduce their environmental impact," said Bill Scott, General Manager of Zipcar Portland. Read the full article>>
