Message from Brian...
Happy November!!!
Snow. No Power. No Trick or Treating!
Well once again Mother Nature has been unkind to the Nutmeg state and I hope everyone is safe and power is restored ASAP. It seems like only yesterday that we said the very same thing after Irene hit and now Alfred has shut out the lights as well.
I wonder if all of those people who promised to back-up their data after Irene ever did? Or if the Records Manager who protects and saves the company information has been rewarded or at least thanked??? Well we don't know and probably won't, but as professionals in this industry, this is the second occurrence when not only the importance of safeguarding and protecting your information is crucial, but also the speed and efficiency of which that information is retrieved after power is restored that will shine the "light" on the Records Professional. Whether the information is paper or digital, on-site or offsite, you and your team are probably responsible for protecting it, locating it and delivering it.
Once again, please contact me if there is anything we as a Board can do to assist and I wish everyone luck and a speedy power up. Our next meeting is Tuesday November 15th at Baci Grill in Cromwell and I hope to see everyone there...
Thank you and stay safe.
With Regards,
Brian F. Paul
President, ARMA Connecticut Chapter

NEW THIS YEAR ... CRM STUDY GROUPS
Anyone who is studying for the Certified Records Manager (CRM) exams can sit with a CRM during the 5:30-6:00 pm networking period to ask questions, get advice or look for whatever help you may need. We can also work with you one on one, just let us know your preference. We are very fortunate to have so many CRMs within our chapter membership and one or two are usually in attendance at each meeting. Just let us know that you are studying for the CRM and we can make ourselves available. Even though we are always available, we want to reach out to members who are thinking about pursuing the CRM or who are already in the process by making ourselves available at Chapter meetings especially during the networking portion.
Here are most of the ARMA Connecticut Chapter CRMs that may be available for assistance during one of our meetings:
Anita Castora, CRM; Melissa Dederer, CRM; Eunice DiBella, CRM; Ron Ellis, CRM; Bill Ludkiewicz, CRM; Carolyn Mariani, CRM; Pat Mark, CRM; Linda Mosier, CRM; LeAnn Power, CRM; Jason Stearns, CRM; Dana Yanaway, CRM; Karl Zoeckler, CRM

 Document Management Series
by Anita Castora, CRM
There are many reasons why companies have a Records Management Department, or, in some cases, a Document Management Department. This series will discuss the different benefits.
I. To Reduce Operation Costs
Having a Records Management policy with a coordinated retention schedule gives your organization a road map to purging your records. An annual records clean out should be conducted and records purged on a regular basis in compliance with your RIM policy. This helps reduce operation costs by eliminating records, saves space, and increases your efficiency as you will be able to find your records more quickly. Conducting an annual records clean out promotes your RIM program and sets a standard of excellence.
Recordkeeping requires administrative dollars for filing equipment, space in offices, and staffing to maintain an organized filing system (or to search for lost records when there is no organized system). It costs $22 less per linear foot of records to store inactive records in a Records Center versus in the office. Multiply that by 30% to 50% of the records in an office that doesn't have a records management program in place, and there is an opportunity to effect some cost savings in space and equipment, and an opportunity to utilize staff more productively - just by implementing a records management program.
