Message from Brian...
Well February has come and gone in the quickest of fashions and I have a personal dilemma. My daughter wants to save all of her Valentine's cards that she received from friends. While we don't have a formal destruction policy, I feel bad just throwing them out when she is sleeping. Last I checked, John Montana has not written on the issue, SOX does not cover it nor does FACTA. Although retention is always a major issue, I wonder if it all comes back to getting the "initial buy in" from the end users. Whether your end user is a Senior Partner or an AP clerk, why is it so difficult to get the message out that records are not only very important, but by properly managing them and the processes surrounding them your job may actually be easier and oh yeah, compliant. Think about it, how many of us have read about the high profile cases where records were subpoenaed, or the defense spent millions of dollars reproducing or searching for documents that mysteriously went away? Well here is my question. Instead of always being on the defensive, when will companies realize and acknowledge the importance of properly managing their Records and Information from the onset? My guess is a company would enjoy the view a lot better if they weren't looking at it from behind the defense table.
As always I thank you and look forward to seeing you on Tuesday March 22nd when Marcel Rodriguez of NBC Universal presents "The Challenges of Managing Records for a Global Media Company".
With Regards,
Brian F. Paul
President, ARMA Connecticut Chapter
