PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Greetings ARMA members and friends,
We are slowly winding our way to the end of another ARMA business year and the time for the terms of the current Board of Directors to finish in June. It has been a wonderful two years, but it is time for a new Board of Directors.
The slate of officers is complete, and includes some new as well as a few returning faces. At our next meeting you will have the chance cast your votes and decide on who will lead the Chapter for the next 2 years. If you have an interest in lending your time and talent to the Board for any future activities, please contact our Immediate Past President, Bill Ludkiewicz. We are always looking for committee members who are willing to help advance the mission of our ARMA CT Chapter.
Earlier this year, I commissioned a Committee to review the Bylaws of the ARMA Connecticut Chapter. During a recent Board meeting, this Bylaws Committee presented a number of revision recommendations that include the following: (1) to change the term limits of officers from two years to one year with the option to run for a second term; (2) to avoid conflict of interest issues, require that only one member from the same organization may serve on the Board at the same time, and (3) to create an addendum to the officer job descriptions in the Bylaws, that provides specific guidelines on how to carry out the duties of each office. Board members are currently reviewing these recommendations and will provide comments to the Committee. Once the changes are agreed upon, they must be sent to ARMA International for comments, edits and final agreement. After approval by ARMA International, the Bylaws will be sent to the ARMA CT membership for a final vote.
CMOTY: Don't forget to send your recommendation of the Chapter Member of the Year to MJ DeFeo at mj.defeo@gmail.com by May 7.
Please note that the May meeting has been changed to May 11. We did this in order to accommodate the schedule of our speaker, John Montaņa, General Counsel for the PelliGroup, Inc., a records and information management consulting firm based in West Point, Virginia.
We are excited to have John present on "The Interface Between RIM and Technology Today," as he is a highly respected and knowledgeable resource in the word of Records and Information Management. I hope to see many of you at the Crowne Plaza in Cromwell on Tuesday, May 11.
...Thank you again to my wonderful Board of Directors and everyone who contributes to the success of the Chapter.
ARMAly yours,
Anita |

APRIL Meeting Recap
RIM and Business Continuity Planning
Article & Photo By
Anita Castora, CRM, President
On April 13, 2010 we had the pleasure of listening to Joe Olivo from SunGard, a leader in business resumption solutions. Joe has over 20 years of business continuity experience and is a trained instructor for business continuity planning at all levels. He has helped install systems in many different industries, but is most proficient in the financial and insurance brokerage arena. Joe worked at the World Trade Center during 9/11 and the insurance company he worked for lost 167 people. After such a horrific incident, he stated that the recovery strategies and change controls in place were key to the recovery of their organization.
For our presentation, Joe compared a healthy BCP to a healthy person and used the US Food Pyramid as the basis for the major components of good health. By highlighting how bread is the "staff of life", he equated it with how a well defined continuity management program can be the foundation and glue of an organization's long term survival in the event of a disaster. He was very entertaining and made some very good points on healthy bodies and healthy business continuity plans.
The major components of your Business Continuity Program should be: business continuity management, a risk assessment or business impact analysis, business continuity strategies, plans and resources and then testing and exercises.
As with any new program, you need management approval from the top before you get started. The next step is to conduct a business impact analysis or a risk analysis. This exercise will identify and measure all the different risks to your organization. With the risk analysis, you will assess the risks and start to create strategies and priorities per each department and each function that has been identified as critical. All of these strategies will lead to the creation of a business continuity plan. Once you fine-tune your plan, it is very important to test it and revise as needed on a regular basis. And last but not least, remind people to update and maintain their plans and keep everyone informed about it. Communication to the BCP team is key.
We had a lot of fun listening and learning as Joe shared the basics with us and compared the concepts to a healthy diet. Joe was a baker at one time with his own bakery and was very passionate about good ingredients and healthy food. There were some good questions and dialogue from the attendees.
