News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)
December 5, 2011

Good morning!

LICADD supports current efforts to strengthen New York State's Prescription Drug Monitoring Database and seeing a few doctors taken away in handcuffs sends a clear message to the bad guys in the medical community that the days of putting profits before patients are over. These moves, along with increased law enforcement efforts aimed at those who misuse prescription pills will restrict access to addictive painkillers.

Limiting the supply, though, doesn't impact demand and without access to treatment, those struggling with addiction and physical dependency will likely engage in more criminal behaviors and make the jump to heroin as a cheaper and more accessible alternative. It's like squeezing a tightly-capped tube of toothpaste - the addiction need to go somewhere.

So, crack-down in a big way, but let's make sure that getting help is as easy as finding a new way to get high.

Help Out Our Kids Over The Holidays!

On Friday, December 9th join the LICADD interns at Aura Lounge in East Meadow as they host a toy drive benefitting the children in the BUDDY Mentoring Program. The party starts at 6pm. Admission is FREE when you bring an unwrapped toy and say that you are with "Cosmic Elves Production." There will be a buffet, refreshment specials, and a DJ. Come join us for a night of fun benefitting a great cause. Aura Lounge is located at 1900 Hempstead Tnpk. In East Meadow.

All toys collected on December 9th will be wrapped and given out to the mentees on Wednesday, December 21st at our annual BUDDY Holiday Party. It will be held at Kellenberg Memorial High School in the gymnasium. There will be food, fun, and festivities. We are also in need of new or gently used winter apparel to give out to our mentees at the party.

Make a child's holiday a truly memorable one! If you have any questions or would like to donate to either event, please contact Lauren Ventimiglia at 516-747-2606

World AIDS Day
Last Wednesday marked World AIDS Day, a time set aside to remember those who have lost their lives and to re-commit ourselves to eradicating a preventable disease. Because of the well-established connection between substance abuse and HIV, LICADD was pleased to participate in an Albany-based live/online town hall meeting sponsored by the NYS Department of Health and here's a link to an article written by Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds and published on JedMorey.com.
AMA Takes Action On RX Abuse
At its Interim Meeting in November, American Medical Association's House of Delegates directed the organization to promote physician training and competence on the proper use of controlled substances and encourage doctors to use screening tools from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and others to identify patients likely to abuse prescription drugs. The directive also calls on the AMA to make substance abuse identification and treatment resources available and encourage physicians to query the prescription-drug monitoring programs established in 36 states.

The House of Delegates asked the AMA Council on Science and Public Health to report back at the June 2012 Annual Meeting on the effectiveness of current drug policies, strategies for preventing fraudulent prescriptions and recommendations about whether prescription-monitoring programs should expand reporting requirements to veterinarians, hospitals, opioid treatment programs and Dept. of Veterans Affairs facilities.
