Good morning...
Thanks to all of you who joined us for the 22nd Annual Peter Sweisgood Breakfast yesterday. It was among our best ever as we honored the memory of Stu Paul, Dr. Stephen Dewey and the wonderful folks at News 12. Our two speakers - Teri and Heather - captivated the room as they shared their stories and we were thrilled to have dozens of young people in attendance who experienced prevention and recovery in action.
It's important that we take the time to honor those who are championing recovery and take some time to celebrate our victories as we gear up for the challenges that lie ahead. LICADD's five decades of rich history was on display yesterday, as was our resolve for a strong and active future. I know that neither Brink Smithers nor Father Peter would have it any other way.
Warmly,
Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D, CEAP, SAP Executive Director

| Mentoring Works! |
New findings from David DuBois, Ph.D., a nationally-recognized researcher in the youth mentoring field, along with his colleagues confirmed that mentoring programs have a positive impact on a child's life. Research shows that establishing an effective mentoring relationship can happen for young people of all ages and contribute to improved academic achievement, behavior, and social and emotional health.
DuBois' research comes from a meta-analysis of more than 70 evaluations of mentoring programs from the past decade and among his findings were the following: - Mentoring programs over the past decade have been most effective with young people who have pre-existing difficulties or are exposed to higher levels of environmental risk
- Programs matching mentors and mentees according to their interests have yielded greater benefits for participating youth
- Mentees have benefited more in programs that are structured to have mentors offer guidance and act as advocates for their mentees. However, it is important to note that programs should find ways for mentors to take on these roles without crossing boundaries and becoming over-involved in young people's lives.
"Mentoring is a strategic intervention that gives communities a way to multiply their support for young people," said DuBois. "But, funders and policymakers need to understand that they will get the best return with programs that use evidence-based practices, such as mentor screening and training. And, if they do, mentoring can be a strong and positive investment in the future of America's children." LICADD continues to offer its BUDDY Mentoring Program for children of incarcerated parents. Teen musicians in drug treatment win 2012 GRAMMY® experience
| |
Two teens with powerful stories about their experience in drug treatment have been awarded the top distinction in the MusiCares® and GRAMMY Foundation's® Teen Substance Abuse Awareness through Music Contest. The annual contest was created to celebrate National Drug Facts Week and is coordinated by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health.
The first place winners, Harvie and Amanda, are two teens currently in treatment at the Phoenix House Academy in Los Angeles. Their entry, an original song entitled "Like a Phoenix in the Air," chronicles their feelings about being teens in drug treatment and their desire to rise above their addictions "even with a broken wing." The song ends with the lyrics "Cuz I may fall one hundred times before I sleep, but I promise you I'll get back up tomorrow."
MusiCares® and the GRAMMY Foundation® provided a panel of judges that included musical artists, while NIDA provided technical expertise in the judging process. Points were given for accurate depictions of subject matter. The winning entries can be seen and heard here.
