News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)
September 6, 2011

Good morning...

Hope you had a wonderful weekend with friends and family. I had the privilege of attending a wonderful conference last week sponsored by the federal Office on Violence Against Women. With a new federal grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, LICADD is partnering with the Retreat in East Hampton to launch a new campaign focused on engaging men in efforts to reduce violence against women. This program links nicely with out mentoring initiative and one of our key priorities will be men in early recovery. This is a great partnership between two of our region's top nonprofits and I hope you'll keep an eye out for news about this exciting project.

Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D
Executive Director

September is Recovery Month!
President Barack Obama has proclaimed September "National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month." He wrote in part: "This month and throughout the year, we must promote recovery and support the growth of healthy, resilient individuals and families in the United States.  Today, alcohol and other drugs threaten the future of millions of Americans.  Abuse of prescription medication has reached epidemic levels, drunk and drugged driving pose significant threats to public safety, and individuals in recovery continue to confront barriers to full participation in our society." The complete proclamation is linked here.

You can observe Recovery Month locally by coming to LIRA's Third Annual Rock-N-Recovery Celebration on Saturday, September 24th from 6:00-10:00PM at the Babylon Town Hall Annex Cafeteria on Phelps Lane in Babylon. It's a great event!
Back-To-School Mentoring Picnic

On Sunday, LICADD's BUDDY Mentoring Program will host a back-to-school picnic for all mentors, mentees, friends, and family at Eisenhower Park, Picnic Area North Linden B from 12:00noon - 5:00p.m.

Join the BUDDY Program for a fun-filled day with activities, school supplies, food, and more! Celebrate the end of a beautiful summer and the beginning of a new school year. The mentoring program will also be hosting a 10 Year Anniversary Memorial Service in remembrance of the innocent lives lost on 9/11. LICADD encourages all to join us at 2:00 p.m. for a moment of silence to honor those we have lost and the soldiers that continue to serve our country.
