News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)
August 29, 2011

Good morning...

It was a rough weekend for most Long Islanders and those on the East Coast. We hope that everyone fared ok. Kudos to the first responders and public servants who worked so hard around the clock to protect life and property. Long Islanders really shine in times like these and as the clean-up begins, we should try to maintain some of that cooperative spirit. It's what pulls us through the tough times and gets us one step closer to the sunshine.

Executive Director

Upcoming Anger Management Class

On Saturday, September 24, 2011, LICADD will host a full-day Anger Management Workshop from 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m at the agency's Ronkonkoma office.

Class size is limited to ensure attendees receive the utmost attention. Classroom exercises and instructional materials are used to help guide participants in learning a variety of skills including stress management, communication training, anger management, empathy, conflict resolution, as well as skills in developing better judgement and impulse control. Participants will receive an official certificate after completing the course. LICADD's anger management services are approved by all courts, probation departments, and Child Protective Services.

"The biggest take away from this seminar is that anger isn't bad, it's an emotion just as the rest," said LICADD Assessment, Education, and Referral Specialist Steven Pinto, M.S., MHC. "By practicing certain skills, we can manage anger in a healthier way." Many participants extend this learning experience and find themselves enrolling in our weekly series after the full-day course.

LICADD is the premier provider of anger management classes on Long Island, offering low-cost anger management workshops, classes, and coaching in both Nassau County and Suffolk County. The fee for the full-day Anger Management Workshop is $199. Payment for LICADD's anger management services may be made via check, cash or major credit card. Those on Medicaid, Public Assistance or EAP clients are eligible for a reduction in fees.

The workshop will be held at LICADD's Ronkonkoma office, conveniently located at 2805 Veterans Memorial Highway, Suite 26, just off of the Long Island Expressway. The full-day Anger Management Workshop is known to fill to capacity well in advance. To secure your placement or for further information on the agency's anger management services, please contact Steven Pinto at spinto@licadd.org or 516-747-2606
Google Gives Up Illegal RX Cash
According to the US Department of Justice, online search engine giant Google Inc. has agreed to forfeit $500 million for allowing online Canadian pharmacies to place advertisements through its AdWords program targeting US consumers, resulting in the unlawful importation of controlled and non-controlled prescription drugs into the United States. The forfeiture, one of the largest ever in the United States, represents the gross revenue received by Google as a result of Canadian pharmacies advertising through Google's AdWords program, plus gross revenue made by Canadian pharmacies from their sales to U.S. consumers.

The shipment of prescription drugs from pharmacies outside the US to customers in this country typically violates the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and in the case of controlled prescription drugs, the Controlled Substances Act.  DOJ says that Google was aware as early as 2003, that generally, it was illegal for pharmacies to ship controlled and non-controlled prescription drugs into the United States from Canada.

"This investigation is about the patently unsafe, unlawful, importation of prescription drugs by Canadian on-line pharmacies, with Google's knowledge and assistance, into the United States, directly to U.S. consumers," said U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha. "It is about taking a significant step forward in limiting the ability of rogue on-line pharmacies from reaching U.S. consumers, by compelling Google to change its behavior.   It is about  holding Google responsible for its conduct by imposing a $500 million forfeiture, the kind of forfeiture that will not only get Google's attention, but the attention of all those who contribute to America's pill problem."

Back-To-School Mentoring Picnic

On Sunday, September 11, 2011 LICADD's BUDDY Mentoring Program will host a back-to-school picnic for all mentors, mentees, friends, and family! The picnic will take place at Eisenhower Park, Picnic Area North Linden B from 12:00p.m. - 5:00p.m.

Join the BUDDY Program for a fun-filled day with activities, school supplies, food, and more! Celebrate the end of a beautiful summer and the beginning of a new school year. The mentoring program will also be hosting a 10 Year Anniversary Memorial Service in remembrance of the innocent lives lost on 9/11. LICADD encourages all to join us at 2:00 p.m. for a moment of silence to honor those we have lost and the soldiers that continue to serve our country.

"This event is a great way to celebrate the end of the summer and welcome the new school year," said Lauren Ventimiglia, LICADD BUDDY Program Coordinator. "The BUDDY program has taken great strides this year and we hope to continue that success in the second half of the year. I'm looking forward to spending time with all of the mentors, mentees, friends, and families that are dedicated to this program and the agency's mission."

To RSVP for this event or to donate food, beverages, sporting goods, or school supplies, please contact Lauren Ventimiglia at 516-747-2606 or lventimiglia@licadd.org. We hope to see all of you there!
