News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)

Good morning...

LICADD is moving! After many years in our Williston Park home, we'll be heading to 114 Old Country Road in Mineola to a brand new, more spacious location. The extra space will accommodate our recent growth and allow us to continue to expand our services to meet the growing demand. We expect the move to be complete by the end of the month and I hope you'll keep an eye out for an invitation to our Open House celebration!

HIV Rates Steady Overall; 48% Increase in Young Black Males

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported last week that while the overall number of individuals infected with HIV remains relatively steady, there has been a 48% increase in the number of young HIV-infected African American men who share a same-sex partner from 2006 to 2009.

While African Americans represent 14% of the U.S. population, they accounted for an astounding 44% of new HIV infections in 2009. Injection drug users represented 9% of new infections, but look for that number to rise as heroin injection continues to increase among young people in places like Long Island.

While HIV infections "holding steady" might sound like good news, consider that to this day - 30 years into the epidemic - 50,000 Americans are diagnosed with HIV annually.

Four Loko: Still Crazy After All These Years

Despite its deadly side effects, the use of Four Loko - the popular caffeinated alcoholic beverage - continues to be prevalent among underage drinkers.

A recent report published by doctors at Bellevue Hospital in New York detailed the cases of 11 young individuals who were rushed to the emergency room after consuming Four Loko. Some patients ended up in deadly situations, according to NY1. Doctors stated that the combined effect of caffeine with alcohol results in increased alertness and decreased awareness of physical impairment, a state known as "wide-awake drunk." This condition found patients on subway tracks, unconscious at school, and even alone in a park. According to NY1, one 23.5 ounce can of Four Loko contains 12% alcohol, which is equivalent to approximately two to three beers or one bottle of wine.

Last November, the Food and Drug Administration warned the manufacturers of seven caffeinated alcoholic drinks, including Four Loko, that their products are a public health concern and cannot stay on the market as currently formulated.

While several universities and even states have taken the initiative to ban the consumption of Four Loko, it continues to act as a black market product that poses a major threat to young adults.

Here on LI, a Hampton Bays store clerk was arrested last week for selling Four Loko to a minor as part of an undercover sting operation.
