News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)
August 1, 2011

Good morning...

We often think of prescription drug misuse and diversion as a recent phenomenon, yet it's not. It's an age-old problem. My friend Dr. John Imhof - Nassau's DSS Commissioner - recently sent me a copy of the printed program from a 1971 national conference held at North Shore Hospital. Some of the evening workshops offered included:

"The Drug Epidemic Invades Suburbia"
"The Returning Veteran - The Responsibility of All Americans"
"Legitimate Drugs: Cause for Concern"
"Physician Prescribing Habits"
"The Shaping of Public Attitudes Concerning the Use of Legitimate Drugs"

It's pretty amazing that the agenda for a conference today would look pretty much the same and that the challenges from forty years ago persist. We're doing something wrong.

Smuggling Suboxone

Press accounts from across the US have begun to detail the rampant abuse and diversion of Suboxone. A May New York Times story detailed the difficulties that prison officials are experiencing as visitors try to smuggle the drug to inmates. One prison official from Portland, Maine called Suboxone "the drug of choice right now" and state prison staff in Massachusetts say that the drug now accounts for 12% of all contraband confiscated.

Vermont Corrections Commissioner Andrew Pallito told the Burlington Free Press that Suboxone is now the most commonly seized illegal drug within the state's correctional facilities.

According to the July 27th article, Suboxone was dispensed in Vermont at four times the national rate last year. Some doctors in the state have recently stopped dispensing the drug, because they feel unprepared to address the concurrent mental health health issues that often accompany addiction and because they are unable to provide a comprehensive array of treatment services that go beyond simply prescribing a pill.

New Adolescent Anger Management Groups

LICADD is pleased to announce an expansion of its Anger Management services to include an Adolescent Anger Management group. This weekly psycho-educational group will first meet on Thursday, August 18, 2011 from 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the agency's Ronkonkoma office, conveniently located at 2805 Veterans Memorial Highway, Suite 26, just off of the Long Island Expressway.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), research has shown that managing feelings and emotions is linked to brain development. LICADD's Adolescent Anger Management program utilizes tools that draw the connection between the cognitive and emotional areas in order to enhance consequential thinking. The program incorporates evidence-based concepts with an age-specific approach. By utilizing support and peer-to-peer identification, adolescents are better suited to find a healthy balance for anger responses and emotional self-regulation. The 12-week program incorporates professional support and the "Eight Coping Strategies for Anger Management" in combination with experience logs for a strong connection between classroom concepts and experiential learning.

Remembering Amy...
Lots of insightful commentary being published in the wake of Amy Winehouse's death. Here's a poignant excerpt from a piece Rabbi Shais Taub published on the Huffington Post:

"There is no fact more real to me than the idea that no human power can stand up against the power of addiction. Sometimes I think of it as a giant black hole that can devour the light of a thousand suns and remain just as unfathomably black as if no sun had ever shone at all. It is an insatiable vortex that mercilessly consumes every iota of strength that human power can muster. We throw love at it. We throw loyalty at it. We scream at it. We bargain with it. We fight it. And when we just can't fight it anymore, we swear to ignore it, to never let it hurt us again, that is, until it pulls us back in."
