News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) | June 6, 2011 |
|
Good morning!
LICADD heads to Albany tomorrow morning to press state legislators to pass the 911 Good Samaritan Bill - legislation that provides limited immunity from prosecution for possession of small amounts of drugs or alcohol for those who call for medical assistance for themselves or someone else in the event of an overdose.
Overdose deaths generally don't happen spontaneously and instead occur 1-3 hours after ingestion or injection of drugs. Young people, afraid to call the police because they are impaired or have drugs or alcohol in their possession, often delay seeking help and try ineffective and dangerous methods to revive the overdose victim. Many witnesses flee, and without competent and timely medical care, the patient dies.
We are losing a staggering number of our children, neighbors and friends to overdoses on Long Island. Most overdose deaths are preventable and given the opiate crisis in our region, Long Island's lawmakers need to take the lead in getting this bill done before they break for summer.
We'll be leaving for Albany from our Ronkonkoma office (2805 Vets Highway, Suite 26) at 5:45AM and returning by 7:00PM. LICADD is providing the transportation, refreshments and we'll tell you everything you need to know about the bill, how Albany works and how together we can change state law to save lives. This will be a historic trip and we want you to make your voice heard. We still have space for you! Please call 516-747-2606 or email jreynolds@licadd.org to RSVP.
If you can't make it to Albany with us, please take a moment on Tuesday to call your state senator and ask him to support Bill#4454A. Use this link to get contact info for your state senator.

We'll miss Stewart Paul... |
LICADD mourns the loss of our friend Stewart Paul and we honor the phenomenal contributions he made to prevention, treatment and recovery. Stu is survived by his beloved daughters Tracie and Heather, and his cherished "Special Lady" Jean Altwein. Called "The Grand Old Man of Seafield" he devoted more than 44 years of his life to the field of alcoholism/chemical dependency, helping those who so desperately needed his assistance and expertise. Stu created Employee Assistance Programs, Alcoholism/Chemical Dependency educational, interventional and treatment services and Relapse Prevention tracts. He also served as an Associate Director at LICADD and was friendly with our founder R. Brinkley Smithers. Stu provided more than 10,000 consultants for alcoholics, chemically dependent people and their families; created and conducted over 3,000 hours of Continuing Care Group Therapy Sessions, and provided over 2,000 workshops, seminars and presentations. Stu was also a faculty member at Stony Brook University, Cornell University and Adelphi University and developed and conducted alcoolism/chemical dependency courses at these institutions. Stu made more than 360 television appearances on this subject, and in 2004 was invited by the Government of Korea to be a keynote speaker a their First International Conference on Alcoholism, and was the recipient of countless awards throughout the years. He will be greatly missed.
