News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)
May 9, 2011

Good morning!

As the dust settles on last week's news that Bin Laden had been killed, attention will once again return to the fiscal crisis facing our local, state and federal governments. It's a crisis that affects nonprofits in a big way, especially since it is our organizations that are charged with lending a helping to hand to the growing numbers of those in need. An article I wrote for JedMorey.com on Friday details the challenges and choices that lie ahead for Long Island's nonprofits. In it I opined, "There are lots of nonprofit executive directors laying awake at night these days trying to figure out how to reduce client waiting lists, keep the lights on and make payroll. Business owners do that all the time; it goes with the territory. But there's got to be a better way." Indeed, there is! Click here to check out some of my ideas.

Angel Ball a Success!

Wow! That was the consensus from those who attended last Wednesday night's Angel Ball. We raised more than $270,000 and honored the dedication of longtime board member Dr. John Sheehy. Steve Ford's amazing keynote address received a well-deserved standing ovation and WABC TV's Sandra Bookman did a great job as our emcee. Oheka was nothing less than a magical setting and the extraordinary Joel Sikowitz Orchestra didn't miss a beat.

A big thanks to our entire Board of Directors led by Chairman Bill Baum, our event co-chairs Jeffery Capazzi from The Jobin Organization and Dan Shaughnessy from BNY Mellon Wealth Management, and our Journal Chairs Mike Danzi, Francis Galluccio, and John Mangano.

We'll post come great pictures from this year's Angel Ball on our website shortly. Thanks again who all made this one of our best events ever, including these generous sponsors:

Did You Know?

Vicodin - or its generic equivalent of hydrocodone/acetaminophen - is now the most popular pain relief drug in the country. Its use has grown in recent years, from 112 million doses prescribed in 2006, to 131 million in the U.S. today, according to a recent survey done by IMS Health. Vicodin is easier to prescribe because it is considered a Schedule III drug, rather than a more tightly-controlled Schedule II drug like most other opiates. Scripts can even be called in via phone.

To put painkiller use/misuse in context, consider this: The United States makes up only 4.6% of the world's population, but consumes 80% of its opioids -- and 99% of the world's hydrocodone, the opiate that's in Vicodin.

Family Support Groups in Nassau & Suffolk

If you or someone you know has a family member struggling with addiction, please remember that LICADD offers weekly Family Support Groups in Ronkonkoma and Williston Park. These groups help families get grounded, learn some facts about addiction, and come up with strategies that will help give them some peace of mind. It is an opportunity to gain perspective, new insights and walk away with fresh resources for coping with the disease of addiction. Most importantly, members can connect with other families and understand they are not alone.

Those with an addicted family member are welcome to attend, regardless of whether their loved one is in treatment, has begun the recovery process or is still actively using drugs or alcohol. The groups are professionally facilitated, completely confidential and meet every Saturday from 10:00 to 11:30AM both at LICADD's Williston Park office located at 207 Hillside Avenue and at our Ronkonkoma office, located at 2805 Veterans Highway, Suite 26. A $20 donation per person per week is suggested, but not mandatory. Call 516-747-2606 for more info.
