Good morning! We hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend and we thank you for starting off a brand new week by reading our newsletter! We're excited about the new program we're launching in conjunction with the Retreat (see story below). Violence against women remains a key challenge for our community, as does substance abuse and the myriad links between these two epidemics are clear. As resources continue to shrink, these kind of cross-issue collaborations are critical if we are to achieve maximum impact and increased efficiencies. We'll formally launch this new program within the next couple of weeks and I hope you'll join us in creating a grassroots movement that will serve as a national model for engaging men from all walks of life in our continued quest to save lives. | LICADD & Retreat Win Federal Grant
The Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women announced last week that the Retreat, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing domestic violence services for women and children, and LICADD have won a $300,000 grant to engage men in preventing violence against women.
This initiative will make its impact through the following mechanisms: (1) a traditional media campaign - building awareness through men-targeted print, radio, and television public service announcements about domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking; (2) an emerging-media campaign -including web presence, viral videos, email campaigns, and mobilizing youth through special activity days shared on Facebook and Twitter; (3) 'we come to you' prevention education program days for men and for boys; (4) enhancement of LICADD's existing men-to-boys mentoring program that will add domestic violence prevention to it; and (5) and community organizing-including events that bring various segments of the community (e.g., police, sports coaches, parents, youth, media, and local businesses) together for positive activities that will build awareness about sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking... and achievable ways to prevent each. Funds will provide critical resources for Long Island communities to prevent violence against women and children.
"We applaud the Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women for utilizing critical resources to begin the engagement of our men and boys in the prevention process of domestic violence. We strongly believe that this fundamental shift will put us on the path of finally breaking the cycle of family violence." said Jeffrey Friedman, Executive Director, Retreat.
"The connection between violence against women and addiction has long been established and these twin epidemics must be addressed simultaneously, especially as we consider men who are actively using drugs/alcohol and those in early recovery who may have trouble expressing their feelings without drugs, alcohol or violence" said Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, Executive Director of LICADD. "This collaboration between The Retreat and LICADD will not only save lives, but also provides a blueprint for other communities seeking an efficient, effective and targeted approach to combating violence against women." |

Feds Eye Prescription Meds
A new federal government strategy aims to cut the use of prescription painkillers by 15% in five years. The plan includes doctor training, promoting prescription databases in all states and increased focus on rooting out illegal 'pill mill' clinics.
Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, announced the plan will include a requirement that doctors who prescribe oxycodone and other opioids undergo training on proper prescription practices. The plan, called Epidemic: Responding to America's Prescription Drug Abuse Crisis, also includes a media campaign about the dangers of opioids.
A major part of the proposal will be a push for prescription drug databases in every state. Now 35 states have prescription drug monitoring programs, and eight more states, including Florida, the epicenter of the pill mills, have authorized databases that are not yet running. A fourth part of the plan focuses on aggressively enforcing laws against pill mills. |
