Good morning! We had a great full-day Advocacy Academy on Saturday where we trained a whole new class of citizen advocates who are now part of the growing movement to enhance addiction treatment, prevention and recovery in Nassau and Suffolk counties. We had students from Great Neck, Massapequa, Syosset and Middle Country schools, young people in recovery, parents of addicted kids and community leaders. NYS Assemblyman Joe Saladino gave our luncheon keynote and Janice Talento from Drug Free Massapequa secured the North Massapequa Community Center for our use and even got lunch donated! Thanks to all who made this event so successful, including our own PUSH Coordinator Teri Kroll. It was a great day and we hope you'll think about joining us for our next Advocacy Academy in June. BUDDY (Building Unique, Dynamic & Diverse Youth) brings together three nonprofit organizations - LICADD, the Long Island Council of Churches (LICC) and the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island (MPLI) - to run a mentoring program for children in Nassau County with an incarcerated parent.
Children of incarcerated parents often experience fear, anger, sadness, loneliness, abandonment, embarrassment, guilt, resentment, isolation and emotional withdrawal from family and friends. Family instability, trauma linked to witnessing the parent's arrest, incarceration and/or criminal activities and uncertainty about the future challenge even the most resilient children. Without assistance, many of these children are at increased risk for poor academic performance, drug and alcohol abuse, unsafe sexual behaviors, and juvenile justice or criminal justice system involvement. This program helps break the cycle and ensures that Nassau's most at-risk kids get the help they need to be successful.
We need volunteer mentors who can devote an hour a week to a young person. Orientations are held monthly and we'll give you all the training and support you need to have a great experience. Also, if you know of a young person (4-18yrs) with an incarcerated parent and who could benefit from mentoring, please call Lauren Ventimigila at 516-747-2606. |

SBIRT Support for Primary Care Docs | |
A brand new free nationwide service can help primary care providers who are looking for help in identifying and advising substance-abusing patients. Medical News Today reports that the Physician Clinical Support System for Primary Care (PCSS-P) sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the American Society of Addiction Medicine provides peer-to-peer mentorship and resources for incorporating screening and follow-up into regular patient care.
The service is known as a "warm line" instead of a "hotline" because doctors and other health care providers receive a response within 24 hours instead of immediately. Providers register with the service and receive contact information for a mentor who specializes in screening, brief intervention, treatment and referral (SBIRT) for patients who have substance abuse problems. Providers can contact their mentors via phone or email with specific questions.
NIDA also launched an online interactive single-question screen to help health care providers identify patients with potential substance-abuse issues. The screen asks, "In the past year, how many times have you used the following: alcohol (more than 4 or 5 drinks in a day for women or men, respectively); tobacco products; prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons; and illegal drugs?" If the answer indicates a potential substance abuse issue, the provider can access NIDA's full screening tool for the specific substance. |
