News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)
April 4, 2011

Good morning!

After doing more than one hundred media interviews in 2010, the only media request I declined was when asked to comment on Lindsay Lohan's prospects  for recovery. I don't know Lindsay Lohan, and even if I did, I wouldn't feel comfortable commenting on her treatment choices or making predictions about her success. That's why I've also avoided commenting on Charlie Sheen and every other celebrity that's had a high profile meltdown. Still, there's something in the way we react to these folks that's fascinating. So, I wrote about that in my first contribution to Jed Morey's new site, which features "Plain-Spoken Politics With A Long Island Accent." The article is linked here. Hope you enjoy it!

April is Alcohol Awareness Month

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of NCADD's Alcohol Awareness Month, held each April. This year's  theme, "One too many, " is designed to highlight the extraordinary impact that alcohol, alcohol-related problems and alcoholism have on individuals, on families and children, in the workplace and in our communities. Although the victims of alcohol-related problems number in the tens of millions, it ultimately comes down to one thing and one thing only...one too many!

One too many - drink and drive

One too many - can result in high risk behavior

One too many - people have died from alcoholism

One too many - families have been torn apart due to drinking

One too many - can increase your risk of cancerOne too many - victims of alcohol-related domestic violence, abuse, assault or homicides

One too many - one is too many if you are pregnant

One too many - don't understand that help is available

One too many - children are growing up in a family with alcoholism

One too many - active duty military personnel and veterans need help for alcoholism

One too many - deaths of young people due to alcohol overdose

One too many - people need treatment and do not have access

One too many - are in jail rather than in treatment

One too many - can cause accidents, falls and injury to self or others

One too many - children are born with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)

One too many - victims of alcohol-related falls, fire deaths or accidents

One too many - alcohol-related suicide deaths

One too many - don't seek help for themselves, their family or a friend

One too many - workers miss work due to drinking

One too many - victims of drinking and driving crashes

One too many - still believes that recovery is not possible

One too many - have died from this treatable disease

Our challenge to find a solution also comes down to one. One person making a commitment to raise awareness about the problem and the solutions in our families, our communities, our churches, and our workplaces through a focus on prevention, treatment and recovery!

FTC taking another look at alcohol advertising and wants to hear from you!

The Federal Trade Commission plans to begin a study of the self-regulatory efforts of the alcoholic beverage industry, with a particular emphasis on social media. This will serve as the basis for the FTC's fourth major report on the effectiveness of voluntary industry guidelines for reducing advertising and marketing to underage audiences by beer, wine, and distilled spirits manufacturers.  The first report was published in 1999.

The FTC wants to know what you think about:

  • the companies' compliance with voluntary advertising placement provisions, sales, and marketing expenditures;
  • the status of third-party review of complaints regarding compliance with voluntary advertising codes; and
  • alcohol industry data-collection practices.

The comment period is open until April 26th. Details about submitting comments are here.
