News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)
January 24, 2011
Good morning!

Saturday's Advocacy Academy was a huge success! With 37 people participating, we had parents who have lost children to overdose, parents of addicted kids, young people in recovery, social workers, treatment providers and concerned citizens who spent a very cold Saturday learning about the nuts and bolts of advocacy. They learned about how the state legislature and federal government work, how to make an impact with the media and heard directly from NYS Senator John Flanagan (R-Smithtown) about how best to communicate with lawmakers.

We were also thrilled to have some great folks from Kings Park in the Know, Drug Free Massapequa, the Long Island Recovery Association (LIRA) and United Communities Against Drugs (UCAD) participate. We know that working collaboratively increases our chances for success and we at LICADD value our important partnerships with these groups.

We've got an aggressive game plan in hand and are ready to move forward. Check us out on Facebook and please plan to attend our next Advocacy Academy on April 16th in Massapequa.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D
Executive Director
New Family Support Group
Addiction is a family disease. Having a family member - a son, daughter, spouse, parent, brother or sister - who is struggling with alcoholism or drug addiction can be frightening, frustrating, depressing and all-consuming as you join them in a virtual roller coaster ride of highs and lows. LICADD's new Family Support Group will help you get grounded, learn some facts about addiction, and come up with strategies that will help give you some peace of mind. You'll gain perspective, new insights and walk away with new resources for coping with the disease of addiction. Most importantly, you'll be able to connect with other families, understand that you're not alone and travel the journey with LICADD as your trusted partner in whatever challenges you might face.

This brand new FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP meets on Saturdays at 10:00AM in Ronkonkoma and everyone is welcome! Call us at 631.979.1700 to let us know you're coming.

Docs Need to Learn More About Drugs

A study published earlier this month confirmed what we already suspected: docs-in-training are not getting much information about substance abuse.

"Despite the fact that the substance use is responsible for an enormous burden of disease in their patients, and evidence-based screening approaches have been developed, physicians often fail to identify and treat substance abuse routinely," said Dr. Patrick O'Connor, chief of Internal Medicine at Yale and lead author of the paper.

"This may result not only in ongoing substance use and its complications, but also in inadequate treatment of the medical conditions for which their patients are being seen."

O'Connor and his colleagues made the following recommendations to address the training deficit:

  • raise the priority for substance abuse education (give it the same importance as training for other chronic diseases);
  • enhance faculty development (accrediting organizations should require faculty expertise in addiction medicine);
  • provide organizational infrastructure (put specific faculty and departments in charge of substance abuse education -- preferably, a multidisciplinary team);
  • integrate core competencies into resident training (epidemiology, screening, assessment, intervention, and pharmacological management); and
  • make substance abuse screening and management routine in primary care.

The article was published in the January 4th issue of Annals of Internal Medicine.
