News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)
December 13, 2010
Good morning!

As the holiday travel heats up and debate continues about how best to keep air travel safe, USA Today reports that airlines and airports are taking steps to increase travelers' access to alcohol as a strategy for generating additional revenues.

American Airlines, for example, is offering "happy hours" on certain flights and United Airlines now offers its own signature vodka cocktail. Airports in Chicago recently got permission to sell liquor around the clock and liquor sales now start at 5:00AM at Portland International in Oregon. A full liquor store is set to open shortly in the baggage claim area at Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport.

So, air travel is more stressful and intrusive than ever before, airlines are serving less food than ever before, yet we are making alcohol MORE available? The FAA has logged more than 1,110 reports of serious unruly passenger incidents since 2004. Expect that number to increase in the year ahead.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D
Executive Director

LICADD Mourns Loss of Jack Hamilton

LICADD mourns the sudden loss of our friend and colleague, Jack Hamilton. Jack owned and operated the Long Island Center for Recovery (LICR) in Hampton Bays and has helped thousands of Long Islanders find a path to recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jack's friends and family, including our partners at LICR.

Last PUSH Meeting of the Year!

People United to Stop Heroin on Long Island (PUSH-LI) started as a fledgling Facebook group with just a few members, and has now grown to more than 8,000 members, some of whom met in person for the first time in April to kick-off an historic grassroots effort to strengthen Long Island's addiction prevention, treatment, and recovery system. The group is facilitated by LICADD and led by parents who have lost their children, parents of addicted kids and young people in recovery. The group's mission statement is as follows:

People United to Stop Heroin on Long Island (PUSH-LI) is a bi-county group of concerned parents, young people, and community advocates who in the midst of an unprecedented teen heroin crisis, are advocating for a comprehensive continuum of substance abuse prevention, harm reduction services (including overdose and disease prevention), addiction treatment services, and recovery support for Long Island's young people.

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, December 20th  from 7:00-9:00PM at the Long Island Sheraton located at 110 Motor Parkway in Hauppauge (exit 55). We'll be talking about our game plan for 2011, our advocacy training in January and our upcoming logo contest. Please join us!
