News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)
November 15, 2010
Good morning!

Thanks to all of you who joined us for the 21st Annual Peter Sweisgood Breakfast yesterday. It was among our best ever as we honored Tom MacGilvray, Angela Anton and the students of Kellenberg Memorial High School. Our two recovery speakers captivated the room as they shared their stories and we were thrilled to have dozens of young people in attendance who experienced prevention and recovery in action.

It's important that we take the time to honor those who are championing recovery and take some time to celebrate our victories as we gear up for the challenges that lie ahead. LICADD's five decades of rich history was on display yesterday, as was our resolve for a strong and active future. I know that neither Brink Smithers nor Father Peter would have it any other way.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D
Executive Director
Upcoming Anger Management Classes

road rageThese are tough times for many folks and widespread frustration is evident during rush hour on Long Island's roads, during interactions with others in shopping malls, at work and probably, at home. LICADD offers professionally facilitated weekly anger management classes on Monday nights in Suffolk and Tuesday nights in Nassau as well as a bi-monthly intensive full-day class on Saturdays (next class is this Saturday, November 20th). We use classroom exercises, role playing, and instructional materials to help and guide participants to learn skills such as stress management, effective communication, empathy, conflict resolution and impulse control. LICADD's anger management groups are approved by all courts, probation, parole and CPS. Click here for more information or call LICADD at 516.747.2606.

Hospitals Serving Alcohol?

Hospitals serving alcohol? Not yet, but at least one hospital in Indiana has started allowing patients and their families to bring liquor into their rooms for a post-op buzz. Parkview Ortho Hospital in Fort Wayne recently made the announcement as members of the local media toured their newly renovated facility. A drink with dinner is one of several perks the hospital is offering as they attempt to woo more patients.

Given what we know about alcohol and its impact on the body - especially when combined with medications - Parkview's position as a health care provider is startling. According to the Marin Institute, the health care costs alone associated with alcohol consumption total $26 billion annually, or about $686 for every person living in America. Looks like Parkview is looking to increase their share of those dollars.

A newspaper article about the hospital's policy is here.

DEA Wants Tighter Controls on Propofol

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is pushing to have the popular anesthetic "propofol" classified as a schedule IV drug to limit diversion and prevent abuse, especially among health care professionals. The drug gained some notoriety in June of 2009, when pop superstar Michael Jackson suffered a fatal overdose after taking the anesthetic. Abuse of the drug has increased in the last ten years, particularly among health care professionals with easy access and high stress levels. The mortality rate among those who abuse propofol is said to be greater than 33%.
