News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)
November 8, 2010
Good morning!

I spent most of last week in Minnesota, attending Hazelden's Youth and Addiction Conference, meeting with their staff, and touring their Center for Youth and Families, which includes adolescent inpatient/residential care, a family/parent program, a sibling program and an incredible continuum of care, including recovery coaching and housing. LICADD and Hazelden have always maintained a strong working relationship, but there's nothing like visiting a facility, spending time with management and staff, and getting feedback from young people engaged in treatment there. It takes the guesswork out of referrals, especially those that are out-of-state.

Thanks to Hazelden, I also had the opportunity to hear Jennifer Storm speak. She's written two books about her personal journey and has a third one on the way. If you haven't read "Blackout Girl," it's worth your time and a link to her website is here. She addresses the key issues facing young women, and ties together issues of addiction, sexual orientation and trauma in a clear and moving way.

I also had the chance to speak to Dr. Andrew Finch who has been involved with starting and supporting several recovery schools nationwide and is Executive Director of the Association of Recovery Schools.  Minnesota has six recovery schools; New York has none. We should change that, especially here on Long Island.

As we struggle with historic levels of addiction among adolescents in Nassau/Suffolk, there are plenty of lessons to be learned from other regions, best practices that we can expand and some new ideas worthy of exploration. I'm energized by the challenges that lie ahead and I know you probably are, too. Let's keep forging ahead, serving kids and families, and saving lives. Let's challenge Minnesota a bit and make Long Island a national model for addiction services.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D
Executive Director

Because Addiction is a Family Disease...

Having a family member - a son, daughter, spouse, parent, brother or sister - who is struggling with alcoholism or drug addiction can be frightening, frustrating, depressing and all-consuming.

That's why LICADD offers a 3-part family education and support  series that covers the basics about addiction, co-dependency and treatment options and helps families get the help they need. Families that have completed the series have the option of continuing on with a professionally facilitated planned intervention designed to encourage their loved one to seek chemical dependency treatment, while at the same time reinforcing family boundries. Our interventions can be done anywhere, anytime and fees are based on ability to pay.

Our family education series is held on Wednesdays in Williston Park (207 Hillside Ave) and Thursdays in Ronkonkoma (2805 Vets Hwy, Suite 26) from 6:00PM-8:00PM. No pre-registration is necessary and families can begin the series at any time.

If you or someone you know could use a hand, we're here to help. Call us at 516-747-2606 or 631-979-1700 for more details.

Cold and Cough Season is here!

Cold and cough season is here and that means that you likely have more remedies in your home. Cold and cough medications are among the most frequently abused drugs among teens. Here are some terms you should know:

"Robo" - Usually a reference to Robitussin or another brand of cough syrup with that contains dextromethorphan (DXM).

"Robo-fizzing" - Combining cough medicine with soda or alcohol.

"Dexing" - Getting high on products with DXM.

"Syrup head" - Someone who uses cough syrup or other products with dextromethorphan to get high.

"Skittles" - Usually refers to Coricidin tablets with DXM, since they have a size and shape similar to the candy.

"Triple C's" -  Coricidin Cold and Cough tablets.

"Vitamin D" - Another term for medicines with DXM, often applied to Robitussin products.
