Youth Advisory Board Meeting | |
Don't forget to join us on Wednesday, November 3rd from 6:00PM-7:30PM for our Youth Advisory Board Meeting. YAB brings together young people 15-21 of diverse backgrounds from across Long Island to share their experiences and opinions with the agency's Board of Directors, management team and staff responsible for prevention education, community outreach and adolescent services. Members not only provide feedback on LICADD's programs, printed materials, website and outreach strategies, but also generate new ideas on how to make drug-free and alcohol-free living the norm, rather than the exception. Those interested in attending or volunteering may call LICADD at 516-747-2606. |

NJ College Bans Alcoholic "Energy Drinks" |
After several students were hospitalized, Ramapo College President Peter Mercer has banned caffeinated alcoholic beverages like "Four Loko" and "Joose" from his campus. Smart move. We first wrote about alcoholic energy drinks (AEDs) back in July when U.S. Senator Charles Schumer called on the Federal Trade Commission to launch a full-blown investigation into AEDs. In his letter to FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz, he outlined his "grave concern" over the promotion of caffeine-infused, flavored malt beverages like Joose and Four Loko. "The style and promotion of these products is extremely troubling," Schumer wrote in his letter. "Frankly, it looks to me as if manufacturers are trying to mislead adults and business owners who sell these products, while at the same time actively courting underage drinkers. This type of marketing is, at minimum, grossly irresponsible."
High amounts of caffeine and other stimulants in AEDs mask the effects of the alcohol and several studies have found that those who drink AEDs drink more alcohol, and get drunk more often. They were also twice as likely to experience alcohol-related harm such as being hurt or injured, being sexually assaulted or suffering an overdose. Both Joose - which trumpets its 12% alcohol content - and Four Loko market their products aggressively via their websites and social networking websites such as Facebook.
Here are a few actual entries from the official Four Loko Facebook page collected yesterday:
"This drink is a blackout in a can....remember I had 6 at one point..." "I LOVE FOUR LOKO'S I HAVE YALL FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER, SNACK, & DESERT TIME. YAYYY KEEP MAKING ME HAPPY, ALL SMILES!" "I don't think i've ever heard/seen anyone over the age of 21 drinking these...haha. definitely for young buhls."The pictures here come from directly from Four Loko's Facebook page as well. New Jersey Assemblywoman Mary Pat Angelini is ready to take the ban statewide and has proposed a bill that would ban the sale of AEDs in New Jersey. Here's a link to her bill introduced last week. Absent federal action on these dangerous products, New York State should enact a ban on AEDs. |
