News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)

September 13, 2010

Good morning!

I had the chance to appear on News 12's Long Island Talks last week to discuss a new proposal by Suffolk Legislator Tom Barraga that would prohibit the sale of jewelry to pawn shops by people under the age of 21. The current age is 18 and Barraga has introduced the measure in response to complaints he's gotten from parents of addicted young people who have hocked their family's possessions to buy heroin.

Barraga deserves kudos for responding to his constituents and trying to help. The bill will likely become law and that's fine. It won't hurt. But most kids aren't selling stuff to pawn shops; they're selling it to their extensive network of friends and trading it directly with mid-level users/dealers.

At LICADD, we see parents everyday whose kids have emptied their homes of valuables in order to finance their drug habit. Those parents would love to have their stuff back, but more importantly, they want their kids back.

To help them do that we need a more comprehensive approach to addressing addiction - stronger prevention efforts, more treatment slots, better recovery support  - and the financial resources necessary to  effectively battle Long Island's heroin crisis.

Sincerely,
Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D
Executive Director

LICADD Helps Families

Having a family member - a son, daughter, spouse, parent, brother or sister - who is struggling with alcoholism or drug addiction can be frightening, frustrating, depressing and all-consuming.

That's why LICADD offers a 3-part family education and support  series that covers the basics about addiction, co-dependency and treatment options and helps families get the help they need. Families that have completed the series have the option of continuing on with a professionally facilitated planned intervention designed to encourage their loved one to seek chemical dependency treatment, while at the same time reinforcing family boundries. Our interventions can be done anywhere, anytime and fees are based on ability to pay.

Our family education series is held on Wednesdays in Williston Park (207 Hillside Ave) and Thursdays in Ronkonkoma (2805 Vets Hwy, Suite 26) from 6:00PM-8:00PM. No pre-registration is necessary and families can begin the series at any time.

If you or someone you know could use a hand, we're here to help.
