Good morning and welcome back to work!
Labor Day is now behind us and as we relaxed a bit, we probably didn't spend alot of time pondering the true meaning of the day. First celebrated in 1882, Labor Day gives us an opportunity to recognize the contributions hard-working Americans have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. We've had a tough couple of years and economic uncertainty has impacted everyone. Tens of thousands of Long Islanders have lost their jobs and thrown families headlong into crisis - families who were already to struggling survive given the high cost of living here. Those lucky enough to still have jobs find themselves working longer and harder as they do the jobs of three or four of their laid-off colleagues.
If you're an employer, EAP services can help employees and their families deal with mental health and substance abuse issues, as well as financial planning, debt management, elder care, child care and stress management. Productivity will soar and you'll be limiting expensive health care claims. Indeed, according to one federal study, each $1.00 an employer spends on EAP services returns $7.00. If you're an employee, encourage your company or agency to invest in EAP services.
LICADD's EAP - Open Arms - is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit EAPs in the country. We serve the entire Eastern Seaboard and our rates are about half of what other EAPs charge. Use this link to learn more about Open Arms and re-affirm your commitment to a healthy, happy and productive workforce.

Our 30th Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Invitational is just three weeks away. It'll be held at The Creek and Piping Rock clubs - two of the finest golf courses in the Northeast. Dinner tickets are just $200 and we've got some great raffle prizes, including wonderful trips to Scotland, Las Vegas and Florida. We've made it easy for everyone to participate; tee signs are just $150!
While LICADD operates on a shoestring budget, we are serving more people than ever before and have taken a highly visible leadership role in battling addiction in our region. Please help us continue our life-saving work.

| 12 Steps And 10 Days |
The Baltimore Jewish Times published an amazing cover story last week entitled "Recovering Jewish Addicts/Alcoholics, 12 Steps And Rosh Hashanah." The piece profiles two non-profit recovery houses for Jewish men and women and draws the parallels between recovery and the High Holy Days set to start this week.
"The High Holidays are a time for contemplation and self-reflection and a process where someone gets written in the Book of Life for another year. Successful recovery is that on a day-to-day basis. Everyone in the recovery community will tell you that it's one day at a time," says Jewish Recovery House Board Chair Bob Manekin. "The feelings one gets [during the High Holidays] are probably as close as some people will ever get to understanding recovery."
