Good morning....
Our golf outing is going gangbusters and we hope you'll join us on September 27th as we honor Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano. We'll be playing at two of the top golf courses in the country - The Creek and Piping Rock - and by joining us, you'll be supporting LICADD's life-saving services and Island-wide leadership in addictions. WABC-TV's Scott Clark serves as our guest emcee and raffle prizes include luxury golf excursions to Scotland, Florida and Las Vegas. If you're not a golfer, then please join us for dinner, become a sponsor or buy some raffle tickets.
Full event details about the 30th R. Brinkley Smithers Invitational are here. Thanks so much for your support and for helping us keep a promise Brink made to Long Island's families more than 50 years ago.

Relapse Prevention Groups |
Aftercare and support following substance abuse treatment is an essential part of maintaining sobriety and creating a strong foundation for recovery. LICADD's professional staff can help you or a loved one successfully transition from inpatient treatment back home or into a sober living environment. We'll help you recognize potential relapse triggers, get connected with a local support system and come up with a comprehensive relapse prevention plan that works for you.
Our Relapse Prevention Support Groups will help: + Identify relapse warning signs and manage your thoughts, feelings, personal reactions and beliefs. + Understand chronic stress reactions and develop healthy stress reduction activities. + Recognize and analyze addictive thinking (denial and rationalization). + Address unmanageable feelings and learn emotional self regulation. + Create new coping skills and self-defense plans for urges and cravings + Identify drug-seeking behaviors + Make changes in social interactions and relationships (people, places and things) + Foster and accelerate shifts to healthy lifestyles + Nurture the recovery process and build healthy support networks.
LICADD's Relapse Prevention Support Groups meet on Mondays in Ronkonkoma from 5:30-6:30PM and on Thursdays in Williston Park from 5:30-6:30PM. People of all ages are welcome. Call 516.747.2606 for details or to register. |

| The State of Washington Steps Up Again |
We gave Washington state props a few weeks ago for enacting 911 Good Samaritan legislation that creates limited immunity for witnesses who call for help during a drug overdose. New York, of course, hasn't acted on the bill, nor have lawmakers even approved the 2010-2011 budget that was supposed to go into effect on April 1.
The Washington State Legislature, though, recently enacted new legislation that imposes tough new rules on doctors who want to prescribe opiate painkillers to patients, including mandatory third-party evaluation of patients who request higher doses of the drug but don't show signs of improvement.
Of course, OxyContin-makers Purdue Pharma reportedly lobbied against the law, saying the new regulations could deprive patients of appropriate treatment.
Perhaps once New York State lawmakers stop bickering and get back to work, they can follow in Washington's footsteps and start enacting policies in our state that will save lives and preserve public health. New York Times coverage of the new Washington law is here. |

For more than 50 years, LICADD has operated almost entirely on community contributions and donations from people like you. We don't have fancy offices, glossy brochures and a stable of administrators. Our budget is lean, our overhead is minimal and our operations are laser-focused on our core mission of saving lives. That means that your donation goes further when you give to LICADD. And today more than ever, every dollar counts.
