Good morning....
Newsday continued its excellent coverage of Long Island's opiate crisis last week with a story about the dramatic increase in treatment admissions related to prescription drug abuse. The numbers are startling and become even more significant considering that some of LICADD's clients choose out-of-state rehabs, which aren't part of New York State's official stats. To be sure, some of the best addiction treatment in the world is available right here on Long Island and in New York. That's why about 75% of our placements remain in NY. Others though, are looking for a particular specialized service, have heard about a particular facility from a friend or family member, believe that they'll get more privacy in a community other than their own, or want a fresh start with a complete change in scenery. Bed capacity on Long Island, too, remains an issue, particularly for adolescents.
Referring beyond the boundries of Nassau/Suffolk is hard work and frequently means 10-hour car trips as we scout-out and do site visits at rehabs in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut. Still, we know that there are many paths to recovery and our job at LICADD is to give our clients as many screened and solid options as possible.
Our affiliation with the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence make us part of a national network and we're proud of the relationships we've created with top-quality treatment providers nationwide. A special thanks to treatment providers here on Long Island and across the country who work so hard to improve the lives of those suffering with addiction. We truly appreciate all you do.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D Executive Director |

Adolescent Treatment in Time |
Keying into the jump in adolescent treatment admissions, Time magazine recently published an article entitled, "Does Teen Drug Rehab Cure Addiction of Create It?"
Putting aside the provocative headline suggesting that addiction can be "cured" or "created" by treatment, the article explores the notion that placing teens into treatment groups with experienced, long term adult drug users can actually increase their drug use.
"I've known kids who have gone into inpatient treatment and met other users. After treatment, they meet up with them and explore new drugs and become more seriously involved in drug use," added Tom Dishion, director of research at the Child and Family Center at the University of Oregon. Yep. And he's probably met kids who have gone into treatment, met other users and found a path to recovery with support from their peers. One size doesn't fit all and individualized treatment plans are critical.
The article goes on to suggest that some treatment programs may weaken the bonds between adolescents and their families, which also can increase the risk of drug use. Plus, teens - even more than adults - may struggle with the notion of powerlessness, a key part of 12-step programs. The article concludes with a pitch from NIDA for evidence-based treatment models, which is on-target, but here's another thought:
Addicted kids are nothing new. The fact that we are still trying to answer really basic questions about best practices for adolescents is troublesome and should be a call to action.
If you didn't see the article, read it here. In it, you'll likely find an equal number of statements with which you agree and disagree. |

The Suffolk County Heroin/Opiate Advisory Panel met for the first time last week and has mapped out an ambitious plan of action in order to be able to report back to the legislature quickly. LICADD is pleased to be involved in this exciting and important endeavor and we thank especially Legislators Horsely, Nowick, and Browning for getting everyone to the table. Kudos also to Maureen Rossi from Kings Park in the Know, who began pushing for this effort years ago.

| Congrats to Veritas Villa! |
CARF International announced last week that Veritas Villa has been accredited for a period of three years for its Residential Treatment Program. The latest accreditation is the second consecutive Three-Year Accreditation that the international accrediting body has awarded to Veritas Villa.
This accreditation represents the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization and shows the organization's substantial conformance to the CARF standards. An organization receiving a Three-Year Accreditation has put itself through a rigorous peer review process and has demonstrated to a team of surveyors during an on-site visit that its programs and services are of the highesty quality, measurable, and accountable. Veritas Villa is located at 5 Ridgeview Road in Kerhonkson, New York. It has been providing residential treatment for chemical dependency in the Hudson Valley since 1973. LICADD congratulates Jim and Sue on this important recognition! |
