News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)

June 7, 2010

Dear Friend:

Vodka EyeballingI hope your summer is off to a great start. As you've likely heard, these are the 100 deadliest days of the year, and alcohol plays a role in many summer fatalities. The latest dangerous fad is "eyeballing," where young people pour vodka directly into their eyes using a shot glass or the bottle itself, in hopes of getting drunk in the "blink of an eye." They, of course, don't get drunk any faster and optometrists say the high alcohol content in vodka can damage their corneas leading to blindness. There are hundreds of YouTube videos online depicting intoxicated young people who are vodka eyeballing as part of a dare and several of the videos have 50,000+ views.

This and other unhealthy behaviors are impacting our kids in a big way and the web has given them an international audience, allowing bad ideas to spread like wildfire. We know, however, that good ideas can spread just as quickly, which is why we are boosting LICADD's online presence each and every day. Thanks for your support and your efforts to keep our kids safer.

Sincerely,
Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D
Executive Director

PUSHing for Change!

CooperationWe held our second PUSH meeting last Wednesday and the room was so full, we need to move to another venue! In a discussion led by parents who have lost their children, parents of addicted kids and young people in recovery, we finalized our mission statement which is as follows:

People United to Stop Heroin on Long Island (PUSH-LI) is a bi-county group of concerned parents, young people, and community advocates who in the midst of an unprecedented teen heroin crisis, are advocating for a comprehensive continuum of substance abuse prevention, harm reduction services (including overdose and disease prevention), addiction treatment services, and recovery support for Long Island's young people.

The group generated an extensive list of priorities and narrowed our initial action plan down to the following:
1) Enhancing school and community based substance abuse prevention education.
2) Educating pediatricians about screening, brief interventions and referrals to treatment (SBIRT).
3) Expanding regional overdose trainings.
4) Enhancing community dialogue with law enforcement and educating patrol officers about community resources.

Special thanks to Kevin S. for being our featured speaker and to Suffolk Legislators Tom Cilmi and John Kennedy for participating! Our next meeting will be announced shortly and we hope you'll join us!

1 in 5 Kids Have Misused Prescription Meds

pill bottleThe federal Centers for Disease Control announced last week that their 2009 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that 1 in 5 high school students in the United States have ever taken a prescription drug, such as OxyContin, Percocet, Vicodin, Adderall, Ritalin, or Xanax, without a doctor's prescription. Prescription drug abuse was most common among white students (23%), followed by Hispanic students (17%) and then black students (12%).  Prescription drug abuse was most common among 12th grade students (26%) and lowest among 9th grade students (15%). There was no difference in prescription drug abuse by gender.

The YRBS also asks several questions related to alcohol and drug use.  The 2009 survey found that about 72% of high school students ever used alcohol, about 37% ever used marijuana, 6.4% ever used cocaine, 4.1% ever used methamphetamine, and 6.7% ever used ecstasy.  These percentages are similar to those found in the 2007 survey.
