News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)

May 3, 2010
The week ahead promises to be a busy one for LICADD!

As you read this, we're putting the finishing touches on tomorrow night's Angel Ball, which if all goes according to plan, will be among our most successful ever. It will be a special night and I hope to see you there.

You can also look for us at WALK Radio's Family First Forum tonight at St. Joseph's College at 7:00PM. Details here.

On Wednesday you'll see us on East Hampton's LTV discussing PTSD and needs of returning vets.

We'll be at Caron Treatment Centers in NYC on Thursday morning as they honor Claudia Ragni, Owner/Operator of the Kenneth Peters Center for Recovery.

On Friday, we'll be at the Long Island Minority AIDS Coalition's conference presenting information regarding the significant increase in heroin injection among Long Island's young people and its public health implications. Conference runs 8:00AM-1:00PM and is at the Four Points Sheraton in Plainview. Call 631-225-5500 for more info.

Thanks again for subscribing to our weekly newsletter. If I don't see you at one this week's events, I know our paths will cross again soon.

Sincerely,
Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D
Executive Director

PS: Anton News - a media sponsor of the Angel Ball along with the Long Island Press and Long Island Pulse - did a great job covering Manhasset CASA's recent meeting on underage drinking. Read the story here
Smithtown is "Too Good For Drugs"

With a small staff and a huge increase in demand for our services, LICADD took the ultimate challenge this Spring when the Smithtown School District asked us to pilot  Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) for more than 500 of their 6th graders. We worked together with district administrators to work out the logistics and are now entering the 6th week of the 10-week program.

NYS Senator John Flanagan (pictured above with seven program participants), Suffolk Legislators John Kennedy and Lynne Nowick joined Superintendent Ed Ehmann, LICADD's Jeffrey Reynolds, Patricia Rykert, Michael Danzi, and several school board members at a news conference last week detailing the program.

We're gearing up to reach even more students in the Fall and kudos to Smithtown Schools for taking these additional proactive, early steps to prevent teen substance abuse.  Thanks to New York Community Bank Foundation, Capital One and NYS Senator John Flanagan for supporting LICADD's implementation of Too Good for Drugs in Suffolk.
