News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD)

April 12, 2010
April is Alcohol Awareness Month and this month-long commemoration helps us re-focus Long Island's attention on the continued challenges of alcoholism. We proudly sponsored a Town Hall Meeting on underage drinking three weeks ago and we are pleased to be participating in an educational event on Thursday night sponsored by the Manhasset Coalition Against Substance Abuse.

LICADD was founded 54 years ago by R. Brinkley Smithers with a commitment to educate the general public on the nature of alcoholism, and to link alcoholics and their families to treatment. That focus continues today as we reach out to high school students who shouldn't be drinking, college students who binge drink in local bars, pregnant women who drink and put their babies at risk for fetal alcohol syndrome, professionals who drink after a long day of work, senior citizens who drink out of loneliness and veterans who drink in an attempt to re-adjust to civilian life.

LICADD offers confidential assessments, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services. If you or someone you know could use some help, please call us at 516-747-2606.

Sincerely,
Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D
Executive Director

PS: While a website is no substitute for a full evaluation by a health professional, AlcoholScreening.org can help people understand their alcohol use and the potential health issues involved with it.
Artist Creates Painting to Benefit LICADD

PaintingArtist Shane Hibbs has created a wonderful painting celebrating the miracle of recovery and is donating proceeds from sale of the image to LICADD. Entitled "Not a Destination, But a Journey," this amazing piece celebrates National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month 2010, to be observed in September. Painted in vivid colors with broad strokes, the painting features a person with their hands raised in victory at the start of a new day. Twelve flowers and twelve cloud puffs represent the importance of the 12 steps. You'll feel the message of hope, perseverance and victory in this beautiful commemorative piece that will bring any room to life. Signed and numbered canvas prints are just $299 each and only 100 will be issued. You can purchase one by calling LICADD at 516-747-2606 or online here.

LICADD Partners with the Retreat

LICADD has maintained a Riverhead office for years, but we've recently expanded our presence on the East End and have linked-up with The Retreat - a domestic violence organization - to share new office space. The office is conveniently located at 877 East Main Street, Suite 107 near Family Court and DSS. This partnership allows both agencies to save some money, provide more space for clients and facilitates seamless referrals for those dealing with both addictions and domestic violence. As part of the new arrangement, LICADD began providing EAP servicesAcademy to The Retreat's staff.

"We started using Open Arms EAP last Fall and have been very happy with their services," said Retreat Executive Director Jeffrey Friedman. "It's great that our staff who work in the helping profession can get the support and services they need in a safe, confidential and expedient way. Sometimes the helpers need help themselves and LICADD's EAP is now a critical part of our benefit package."

LICADD thanks St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Bridgehampton for supporting our East End services.

The next full-day class is on Saturday, May 8, 2010 from 9:00AM-6:00PM in Ronkonkoma and fees are based on a sliding scale. More details here
