| News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) |

Last week was a busy one for LICADD. We educated 250 parents at a heroin forum in Connetquot on Monday, trained 40 counselors in motivational interviewing for adolescents on Tuesday morning and held a Town Hall Meeting on Underage Drinking in Sea Cliff on Tuesday night. We spoke about Long Island's heroin crisis at three rotary club meetings on Thursday and Friday and distributed literature at Drug Free Massapequa's wonderful outdoor event last Saturday. We began Too Good for Drugs trainings for 500 sixth graders in Smithtown and continued our relapse prevention support groups, family education series in two locations and our weekly anger management group. Most importantly, we helped dozens of families and individuals struggling with addiction, providing screenings, brief interventions and treatment placements.
The demand for speakers, educational programs and for our services is steadily climbing with each passing day. We're scrambling to meet those needs from Elmont to Montauk and I'm thankful that we have friends and supporters like you so that more Long Islanders can experience the miracle of recovery.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D Executive Director

LICADD's Mentoring Program Needs You! |
BUDDY (Building Unique, Dynamic & Diverse Youth) brings together three nonprofit organizations - LICADD, the Long Island Council of Churches (LICC) and the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island (MPLI) - to launch a mentoring program for children in Nassau County whose mothers are incarcerated.
Children of incarcerated parents often experience fear, anger, sadness, loneliness, abandonment, embarrassment, guilt, resentment, isolation and emotional withdrawal from family and friends. Family instability, trauma linked to witnessing the parent's arrest, incarceration and/or criminal activities and uncertainty about the future challenge even the most resilient children. Without assistance, many of these children are at increased risk for poor academic performance, drug and alcohol abuse, unsafe sexual behaviors, and juvenile justice or criminal justice system involvement. This program will help break the cycle and ensure that Nassau's most at-risk kids get the help they need to be successful.
We need volunteer mentors who can devote an hour a week to a young person. Orientations are held monthly and we'll give you all the training and support you need to have a great experience. Also, if you know of a young person (4-18yrs) whose mom is incarcerated and who could benefit from mentoring, please call Valerie Taylor at 516-747-2606. |
| LICADD's Anti-Heroin Efforts go Viral! |
Brochures are nice, but are not always the best way to reach young people today. That's the word from our brand new Youth Advisory Board and we've taken their advice. We've put together a Facebook group called People United to Stop Heroin (PUSH-LI) and we've already gotten more than 4,000 members! There's a nice mix of teens and parents who are sharing their experiences and amplifying the call for prevention. Several members have also posted pictures and moving tributes to loved ones who have recently died of overdoses. We're planning an offline meeting shortly as we plot new strategies for getting the word out that substance abuse is preventable and addiction is treatable. Link to the group is here. |
