Long Island lost another teen to heroin last week. It didn't make the news, but his friends, schoolmates and a few community members have quietly acknowledged what few others want to admit: Heroin killed another kid.
Each death is proof positive that we need to do more and that we are truly in a race against time. Substance abuse is 100% preventable and addiction is treatable. We shouldn't be losing any kids, much less four a month due to overdoses in Nassau County alone. If you're reading this, odds are, you're working as hard as we are to fight what's become one of Long Island's greatest public health challenges. Keep at it in whatever way works best for you. And thank you for your hard work, your friendship and your commitment to saving lives.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D Executive Director |

| Youth Advisory Board Meeting Tonight! |
Our new Youth Advisory Board (YAB) meets tonight from 6:00PM-7:30PM at our Ronkonkoma office (2805 Vets Highway, Suite 26). YAB brings together young people 15-21 of diverse backgrounds from across Long Island to share their experiences and opinions with the agency's Board of Directors, management team and staff responsible for prevention education, community outreach and adolescent services. Members not only provide feedback on LICADD's programs, printed materials, website and outreach strategies, but also generate new ideas on how to make drug-free and alcohol-free living the norm, rather than the exception. We'll be brainstorming ideas for LICADD's new anti-heroin brochure at this meeting. Those interested in attending or volunteering may call LICADD at 516-747-2606. Details here. |
| New Drug & Alcohol Education Series |
A joint project of LICADD and The Kenneth Peters Center for Recovery, the Drug and Alcohol Academy is designed to meet the needs of individuals who have been arrested for an offense that involved the use of drugs/alcohol, those who have tested positive on employer-sponsored drug screens and others who have experienced consequences for substance abuse. This program is geared towards those who have abused alcohol or drugs, but may not necessarily have a diagnosis of chemical dependence. The Academy, through a unique psycho-educational process that spans 12 weeks, helps participants take an honest look at their alcohol and/or drug use, encourages them to change unhealthy behavior patterns, and if warranted, links them with a wide range of high-quality addiction treatment options. The Academy is held on consecutive Monday nights from 7:00PM-9:00PM at Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale. Click here to learn more. |
