| News from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) |
March 1, 2010 |
|
|
March is upon us and with any luck, Spring is just around the corner. Things continue to move at a fast pace here at LICADD and with your support we're serving more people, adding new programs and like most nonprofits, doing more with less. Despite very difficult times, we are meeting the challenge by becoming more creative, forming new strategic partnerships and working even harder to achieve our goals. Thanks again for standing with us as we address addiction here on Long Island and beyond.

| Family Education & Support Services |
|
Addiction is a family disease. Having a family member - a son, daughter, spouse, parent, brother or sister - who is struggling with alcoholism or drug addiction can be frightening, frustrating, depressing and all-consuming. That's why LICADD offers a 3-part family education and support series that covers the basics about addiction, co-dependency and treatment options and helps families connect to the help they need. Families that have completed the series have the option of continuing on with a professionally facilitated planned intervention designed to encourage their loved one to seek chemical dependency treatment, while at the same time reinforcing family boundries.
The series is held on Wednesdays in Williston Park (207 Hillside Ave) and Thursdays in Ronkonkoma (2805 Vets Hwy, Suite 26) from 6:00PM-8:00PM. No pre-registration is necessary and families can begin the series at any time. |
| Do People Seem Angrier Lately? |
These are tough times for many folks and widespread frustration is evident during rush hour on Long Island's roads, during interactions with others in shopping malls, at work and probably, at home. LICADD offers professionally facilitated weekly anger management classes on Monday nights as well as a bi-monthly full-day class on Saturdays. We use classroom exercises, role playing, and instructional materials to help and guide participants to learn skills such as stress management, effective communication, empathy, conflict resolution and impulse control. LICADD's anger management groups are approved by all courts, probation, parole and CPS. Click here for more information or call LICADD at 516.747.2606. |

Interns Gain Experience at LICADD |
|
LICADD relies heavily on interns and this year, we have nine students helping us with various tasks - from answering phones, to conducting assessments and co-facilitating groups, to helping with our social marketing efforts. Here's a note we received recently from one of those dedicated interns:
I began interning at LICADD about four months ago. When I first started I didn't know much about LICADD or what the organization did. After working here, I began to adapt and learned what this agency is all about. LICADD's alcohol and drug prevention and education services for children and families gave another chance at life to many. After being involved in various fundraisers, events and being surrounded with people that are in need, brought me to a full understanding of LICADD's mission. This organization is fighting hard to save peoples' lives and it gives hope to so many. will never forget the day when a woman came in looking to speak to one of the counselors. While waiting she began to talk to me. She was here because her daughter had a problem and LICADD was her only hope. After seeing one of LICADD's counselors, she walked out full of hope and at ease. She turned to me and with tears in her eyes said "thank God for this place." - Lilliann Kravchuk, Communications Major, Hofstra University
If you or someone you know would like to intern or volunteer at LICADD, we could use the help. Please call us at 516.747.2606 to schedule an interview. |

That means that your donation goes further when you give to LICADD. And today more than ever, every dollar counts.
