This is our second edition of LICADD's eNewsletter, designed to keep you updated and informed about our services and community activities. As I mentioned last week, we've abandoned traditional mailed newsletters in order to reduce printing and postage expenses, preserve the environment and because we want to make sure that you get all the latest LICADD news in a timely way. I hope you enjoy these updates and welcome your comments, questions and suggestions. We appreciate your support, friendship and mutual commitment to addressing addiction on Long Island and beyond.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D Executive Director |
| LICADD's New Youth Advisory Board |
Know a teen who might want to join the fight against alcohol and other drugs on Long Island?
LICADD's Youth Advisory Board (YAB) brings together young people of diverse backgrounds from across Long Island to share their experiences, opinions and insights with the agency's Board of Directors, management team and staff responsible for prevention education, community outreach and adolescent services. Guided by their unique experiences and peer relationships, members of the YAB not only provide feedback on LICADD's programs and strategies, but also generate new ideas on how to make drug-free and alcohol-free living the norm, rather than the exception. Membership on LICADD's YAB is open to young people ages 15-21 and a desire to make a difference is a must. The group meets bi-monthly and alternates between our Nassau and Suffolk County locations. Our next meeting will be held on Monday, March 15, 2010 from 6:00PM-7:30PM in LICADD's Ronkonkoma offices located 2805 Veteran's Memorial Highway, Suite 26. RSVP to Steve Chassman at 516-747-2606 or Jade Nelson at 631-979-1700. |
| New Relapse Prevention Support Groups |
Aftercare and support following substance abuse treatment is an essential part of maintaining sobriety and creating a strong foundation for recovery. LICADD's professional staff can help you or a loved one successfully transition from inpatient treatment back home or into a sober living environment. We'll help you recognize potential relapse triggers, get connected with a local support system and come up with a comprehensive relapse prevention plan that works for you.
Our new Relapse Prevention Support Groups will help you: + Identify relapse warning signs and manage your thoughts, feelings, personal reactions and beliefs. + Understand chronic stress reactions and develop healthy stress reduction activities. + Recognize and analyze addictive thinking (denial and rationalization). + Address unmanageable feelings and learn emotional self regulation. + Create new coping skills and self-defense plans for urges and cravings + Identify drug-seeking behaviors + Make changes in social interactions and relationships (people, places and things) + Foster and accelerate shifts to healthy lifestyles + Nurture the recovery process and build healthy support networks.
LICADD's Relapse Prevention Support Groups meet on Mondays in Ronkonkoma from 4:00-5:30PM and on Thursdays in Williston Park from 4:00-5:30PM. People of all ages are welcome. Call 516.747.2606 for details or to register. |

Recovery: Not a destination, but a journey. |
|
Artist Shane Hibbs has created a wonderful painting celebrating the miracle of recovery and is donating proceeds from sale of the image to LICADD. Entitled "Not a Destination, But a Journey," this amazing piece commemorates National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month 2010, to be observed in September. Painted in vivid colors with broad strokes, the painting features a person with their hands raised in victory at the start of a new day. Twelve flowers and twelve cloud puffs represent the importance of the 12 steps. You'll feel the message of hope, perseverance and victory in this beautiful commemorative piece that will bring any room to life. Signed and numbered canvas prints are just $299 each and only 100 will be issued. You can purchase one by calling LICADD at 516-747-2606 or online. |
