THE FUNERAL OF GEORGE HENSEL.
On a bright and warm Monday, January 16, 2012, the funeral services were held for DSAA founding father and Past-President, George Hensel. George had died on January 9 at age 87.
A viewing had been held the prior evening. A large contingent of the Montebello Police was on hand to handle an overflow crowd. The "Celebration of Life" service was attended by over 300 people from all walks of life. DSAA was represented by a large floral display as well as by over a dozen current members. Past-President Joe Pauswinski delivered a eulogy. After the service, a funeral cortege of over 100 vehicles snaked through the Los Angeles freeway system accompanied by 10 California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers. As we passed each entrance ramp, the officers would block entering vehicles to allow the cortege to proceed to the internment at Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The radio traffic helicopter reported the procession this way: You may want to avoid the Pomona Freeway for the next 45 minutes. Traffic Central reports frequent entrance ramp closures for an extremely long funeral procession. Must have been a popular guy!
For those unfamiliar with this location, Rose Hill is a world famous cemetery, which sits on a hill with spectacular views of the city and surrounding vistas. The Hensel Mausoleum sits at the very highest point of Rose Hill. An honor guard from the VFW fired a 21-gun salute. Prayers, poems, and general thoughts were offered by some of George's family. The ceremony ended with the release of two dozen doves into the bright sky.
A farewell meal was offered at Montebello Country Club.
George is survived by his loving wife, Bernadette. He also is missed by four children, 20 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
George's memory lives on in the hearts of countless friends.
