Spring is here and it's brought the next edition of the CDG Newsletter!

Greetings!

Our third newsletter accompanies us as we spring into the new season. Our office team has been busy offering community services to schools and early childhood learning centers as part of Children's Dental Health Month in February. As well as partnering with Regal Cinema, in Lake Zurich, for their opening of the Tooth Fairy movie, in January; providing community awareness for childrens' oral health.
School Exams

As part of the growing awareness to take preventive measures against tooth decay, schools began requiring dental examinations. As stated in the previous newsletter, 51 million school hours are lost due to dental-related illnesses, so the school exams were put in place to help subdue these numbers. In July 2005, school dental examinations became required for kindergarten, second and sixth grades. This is mandatory of all public and private schools. Examinations must be performed by a licensed dentist and he/she must sign a form as proof of the exam. These forms must be presented to the school by May 15th of that school year. There is a dental exam waiver form, but you must be eligible to receive this form. If either form is not turned in on time, the child's report card may be held until the school obtains the form.

Every school then reports to the Illinois State Board of Education in June to determine which children had dental exams. Children can be exempt from these dental exams based on religious objection, medical reasons, disability, or lack of public or private dental insurance.

Special Needs Patients

Downs Child and Mom
As part of pediatric dentistry, the care of special needs patients is an integral part of the practice. At Children's Dentistry Group, we provide all the necessary accommodations for special needs patients. Dr. Herer has been treating special needs patients for over thirty years. It is an important aspect of the practice to be able to provide services to these patients. Parents discover it is sometimes difficult to find proper dental care for these children. Many of Dr. Herer's patients began seeing him as children and currently see him as young adults. These patients include those with medical, physical, mental, behavioral, and emotional special needs. Drs. Herer and Patenio, as well as our entire team, welcome these patients.

Our office is set up to meet the needs of patients with handicaps and limited mobility. We have handicap parking and are located on street level, making front door access easy for patients and parents. Our office has wide door frames, so wheel chairs easily fit through and the examination rooms are wide-set as well. Wheel chairs, or any other equipment a special needs patient may have, effortlessly fit and move around our office. Some patients are not able to be taken out of their wheel chairs, so we are able to provide care with them in their chairs.  D and Lauren

Drs. Herer and Patenio are well educated and fully equipped to provide the proper care for these patients with special needs. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), some special needs patients are more susceptible to tooth decay, gum disease or other oral problems. Some require special precautions prior to their dental care.

In future newsletters we will discuss the specific needs and problems of different types of special needs patients, the dental issues they may develop, and how we will approach these issues.
Fluoride

Sam and Emma - FLFluoride has been used in dentistry as a preventive measure for over sixty years. There are two forms of fluoride: topical and dietary. At our office, we give the patients a topical fluoride treatment every time they come in for a cleaning or preventive care. Fluoride is a compound that contains fluorine, a natural element. The AAPD says receiving fluoride on a regular basis will help prevent tooth decay. Fluoride slows the process of mineral loss in tooth enamel and strengthens areas that are weak, where cavities begin to develop.

The topical fluoride we use at Children's Dentistry is a preventive agent applied to the tooth enamel. The gel is placed in a tray that sits on the patient's teeth for one minute. Children with a gag reflex, or special needs patients who cannot tolerate a tray, may have the fluoride treatment "painted" on their teeth. This means the topical is applied to their teeth using a special brush. The fluoride we use is both safe and effective. It protects against acid attacks that break down tooth enamel. When fluoride is combined with a proper diet and good oral hygiene, the risk of developing tooth decay is lowered greatly.

In a future issue we will discuss dietary fluorides.
Sealants

sealantsSealants are a common, preventive procedure done at our office. They protect the grooved surfaces of the teeth, especially chewing surfaces on the back molars, from fissure decay. A clear or lightly-shaded resin is applied to the tooth surface and shields the teeth from bacteria that cause cavities. The resin is a high-impact plastic material that seals out any food or debris from getting trapped in the tooth, therefore reducing the chance of decay.

According to the AAPD, even if a child brushes and flosses daily, it can be difficult-even impossible-to keep the small grooves and pits clean. Sealants give the child a better chance of remaining cavity-free. The application process is very simple and comfortable. The tooth is cleaned and dried; then the sealant material is placed on the tooth surface. It is hardened with a curing light, making it possible for the child to eat and drink immediately after the appointment. With good oral hygiene, sealants can last many years.
CareCredit
We are very happy to announce that our office now accepts CareCredit. If you are unfamilar with CareCredit, it is another payment option for our patients. CareCredit offers no interest and low monthly payment options, no up-front costs, no pre-payment penalties and no annual fees so you can procede with treatment as soon as you are ready.
