Billing Matters "Billing Component" - Change of Plans

In 2009, LexisNexis announced a plan to sunset Billing Matters by December 31, 2013. Many customers were not happy with this announcement as they like Billing Matters and the tight integration with Time Matters. For these customers, the option to switch to PCLaw or Juris just didn't work.

Companies can listen, and sometimes they change their plans. On August 15th, LexisNexis announced that they will not sunset the Billing functionality of Billing Matters and that they will continue to enhance future versions. They are, however, going to sunset the accounting functionality on December 31, 2013.

The billing functionality includes time and expense tracking, generating pre-bills, bills and statements and tracking trust funds, work-in-process and accounts receivable. You'll still be able to run reports on profitability and productivity.

The accounting functionality, which will be sunset, includes printing checks, tracking transactions not related to clients and general ledger transactions. It also includes financial statements like the Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss Statement. For these functions you can link to Intuit QuickBooks Pro or Premier Edition, versions 2009, 2010 or 2011. For information on linking Billing Matters and QuickBooks, visit the Time & Cents Blog to download our PDF white paper.

If you prefer an integrated Billing and Accounting Solution, PCLaw linked to Time Matters remains a solution worth considering.

Amicus Premium Billing

If you currently use Amicus Attorney and do billing, you should be considering Amicus Premium Billing. Recently released after extensive testing, Amicus Premium Billing adds a tightly integrated billing solution to the practice management capabilities of Amicus Attorney Premium edition.

Amicus Premium Billing offers tools to make sure you capture all of your time and then easily turn those entries into bills for your clients. From within the program you can easily switch between File Information like events, to dos, notes and documents to viewing Billing Information including Work-In-Process, Accounts Receivables and Trust Balances. Billing information can be viewed from a client perspective or from a matter perspective without running reports. With Amicus Premium Billing you can quickly decide who should be billed and make sure that all time is included.

Key reports are, of course, part of Amicus Premium Billing, but you can also create your own reports using the power and flexibility of SQL Reporting Services.

Caren's Tips
Timeslips Stuck Timer
Timeslips Tip - Fix a Stuck Timer, A Better Way

If you use the timer in Timeslips and have ever had a stuck timer you know how frustrating it can be. Sometimes the "Slips - Stop My Timers (CTRL-F5)" or "Slips - Stop All Timers (ALT-F5)" works, but more often, other actions are needed. Typically, the next thing to try is to get everyone out of Timeslips, copy the database to a local drive and run Data Verification - Repair Integrity errors. While this usually works, it is time consuming and generally annoys those who have to stop accessing Timeslips for some period.

Now, there's a better way that we have found works in most cases where the problem is truly a stuck timer. If you can see the slip with the timer running, these steps almost always work:
  1. Create a new client. We suggest naming it something like zzstucktimer. This will make it easy to find but keep it at the bottom of the list.
  2. Locate the slip with the timer running - in the slip listing you can look for the red box.
  3. Change the client name on the slip to zzstucktimer and save the slip.
  4. Now change the status of the zzstucktimer client to Closed. This is easily done through the client list. Changing the client to closed will stop the timer.
  5. Change the zzstucktimer back to Open and return to your slip list. The slip belonging to zzstucktimer can now be opened and reassigned to the proper client.
Your Stuck timer is fixed quickly and easily. If you can't find the slip with the timer running, or this does not work, then you may have a different issue and other repairs are needed. Please call us as we have data repair tools to help fix the problem. We do not recommend waiting as the problem is not likely to go away and may lead to additional problems.

PCLaw Tip - Quick Access to the Features You Want

Do you have reports you frequently access in PCLaw? Do you have a few tasks you generally do and want them "all in one place"?. PCLaw offers a Favorites tab on which you can easily add buttons. Right click on the Favorites screen and choose Add a Button. Then choose the section for the function you want to add like "Reports - Productivity - Collection Summary". You can even add a Launcher button to start up other programs that you might use.

Also, if you have been using PCLaw for a long time, you might still be using the "Quick Step Classic". Many users find the "New QuickStep" is easier to use. You can try it, and switch back and forth as often as you need. Simply right click on any navigation window and choose "Switch to Quick Step Classic" or "Switch to New QuickStep".

QuickBooks - Easy Access to Reports or Other Functions

You may already know that you can customize the QuickBooks toolbar by right-clicking on the toolbar and choosing "Customize". If you have something you do repeatedly, this makes access easier. While "Customize" is easy for removing unwanted toolbar icons, to add something new requires searching through a list to find the right option. Some things you might want to add, including specific reports, aren't even options. However, you can add these functions in a simple process. Open the report or program feature that you want to access and click on "VIEW" at the top of the screen. You will see an option to "Add xxxx to icon bar" where xxxx will be the function or report you have open. Choose the option and your choice will now appear in your QuickBooks toolbar.
