Maximize Your Vacation Ownership January 2010
Greetings!

Planning your Marriott timeshare usage in 2011 should start now. Even though you may not be ready to make travel decisions this far ahead, you still need to plan so that you are strategically positioned for when you do decide on your next vacation. Booking high demand weeks to use, rent or trade should be done as soon as they become available. Are you booking as far in advance as you can? Read on for the answer to this question.

How Far in Advance Can You Book?
The vast majority of Marriott owners own more than 1 week of ownership. Many of our members own 3+ weeks allowing them to book well in advance of 12 months.

CalendarYou may know that you can book 13 months in advance of your desired check-in date if you own 2 or more weeks at the same resort during the same season, and if you book consecutively or concurrently. But did you know that these ownership weeks do not have to be at the same resort nor during the same season? They just have to have overlapping dates within their seasons.

For example, Canyon Villas (Phoenix) Platinum weeks include check-in dates of January-April. And Surf Watch (Hilton Head) Silver weeks include February and March check-in dates. So if you own both of these properties during these seasons and wanted to book at Canyon Villas for check-in March 25 (a next to impossible date to get 12 months in advance), you could call on February 18 and book Surf Watch for March 18 and Canyon Villas for March 25. By using Surf Watch Silver, a low-cost, off-season week as leverage, you are able to call 13 months plus 1 week before your desired Canyon Villas check-in date and almost guarantee obtaining your desired vacation time.

What should you do with the off-season reservation you don't need? Just trade it or turn it into Rewards points.

If you don't own a week that you can use as leverage, you can purchase another week from Marriott or you can turn to the open resale market. Prices of resale properties have never been lower due to the excessive supply--they typically cost half to a third of Marriott's price. These weeks cannot be turned into Marriott Rewards points but they can be used to book 13 months in advance and trade with Interval International with the same power as a week purchased through Marriott. You need to ensure that you are purchasing a resale week from a reputable reseller and that you purchase the right property and season to meet your needs. The Art of Vacationing does not sell or list-for-sale timeshare resorts but we know the reputable companies that do. If you have interest, contact us today for free advice on buying a resale timeshare.

Increase in Fees
Rising fees

It's that time of year again when Interval International increases their trade fees.  Last year they increased the fee to exchange to a non-Marriott property from $139 to $149. This year they hit us where it hurts--Marriott to Marriott exchanges. This fee has increased from $99 to $109.

Marriott Vacation Club, for the first time in years, has increased their fee to trade to points from $104 to $109.

With all of these fee increases, you better be sure that you're making the VERY BEST decisions with your timeshare weeks. If you are unsure, contact us for assistance. (Yes, there is a fee for our services but we typically can save you more than our cost.)

Remember....

to call directly to the Marriott resort you will stay at, 2 weeks in advance, to request the location of the villa you desire. You should do this for your home resort or for a Marriott resort you have obtained on a trade.
