Dance, Dance, Dance...Until You Can't Anymore

I started dancing when I was four years old-and didn't stop until I ended up in the hospital. At the time I started dance classes, I was also in figure skating and gymnastics, as well as on a local swim team. Eventually I chose dance over the other activities, and started to compete seriously. By the time I was eleven years old, I was on the top competitive team at my studio, practicing around twenty hours a week. I was taking tap, ballet, technique, pointe, jazz, modern, lyrical, and hip hop classes. I started pointe before my body had fully formed, and as a consequence my lower body joints became severely damaged over time. I was already at a higher risk for injury, since I have arthritis in my lower limbs. The constant strain of dancing for years eventually took its toll. Read more...
