For those of you who do not know this about me...I am definitely a person that likes science...evidence based practice is an approach that I like to apply to all parts of my life! The sole purpose of this new blog is not to bore you but to serve as information for anyone that may be interested and also a good way for me to keep myself accountable and provide myself with my own "evidence based info."

...

TOMORROW starts the second part of my journey! I am beginning another countdown, if you will...I am going to partake in a 60-day Bikram yoga challenge!
...
There is no way to sugarcoat this part of my next 60 days.

Yoga has been Instrumental in enriching my Life.  First and foremost, it's allowed me to have a deeper connection to God.  The connection as an aspiring yogi evolves through all aspects of my life.  When I first started practicing years ago, my goal was to heal old football injuries.  Those injuries are now healed and now Yoga is my way of life.  I use the phrase "state of consciousness", it's heightened my awareness  in everything that I do.  One of the first things I started to do was take care of myself better.  I started becoming more aware of what I put in my body.  I now watch and research what I eat.  I'm not a vegetarian but I eat very little red meats.  My diet consist of mostly lean proteins and vegetables. More importantly though, I treat people better.  I'm a better giver of my time to causes and people.

The practice of Bikram Yoga has helped in allowing me to become a better person...Read more...

Breathe LungsBreathing Always Normal - Challenger Tips!

If you get dizzy or nauseas, experience headaches or cramping, feel "tingly" and numb in your hands or feet during Bikram Yoga class ... chances are you're not giving your electrolytes enough love.

What are electrolytes?

Simply put, electrolytes are electrically charged minerals or molecules in your body. The most common electrolytes, found in the highest concentration, are sodium, potassium and chloride. Other key electrolytes include calcium and magnesium.

What do they do?

Your body uses electrolytes to maintain fluid balance and help with nerve and muscle function. But when you sweat you lose electrolytes - sodium and potassium in particular. This can cause dizziness, nausea, headaches and - due to temporary impaired nerve function - numbness. That's why it's so important to replenish your electrolytes when you practise Bikram Yoga.

How to replenish lost electrolytes

Add an electrolyte-replacement product like Nuun tablets or the Trace Minerals single packs to your water! Coconut Water is also chock full of electrolytes! We offer all of these and more in our studios to help you have a strong and hydrated class, every time you walk through our doors. Ask the front desk staff for help!

Four years ago Sandy began her practice in Bikram Yoga in order to improve her health and stamina in order to do a 15 day trek in Nepal. She successfully completed that trip to Nepal last year and has spent the last 4 years working on her body to improve it's strength and flexibility. She is  currently participating in the 60 day challenge at Pure Bikram Yoga and uses the knowledge from her experience in that environment to improve her skills as a Rolfer.

"One individual may experience his losing fight with gravity as a sharp pain in the back, another as the unflattering contour of his body, another as constant fatigue, and yet another as an unrelenting threatening environment. Those over forty may call it old age; yet all these signals may be pointing to a single problem so prominent in their own structures and the structures of others that it has been ignored: they are all at war with gravity."
