One Day Closer to Recovery
Karma Yoga Day June 4th, 2011
The number of children diagnosed with autism is climbing at epidemic levels. As those numbers climb, more research is being done to find out why so maybe one day we have a cure. Until then, there are countless families out there struggling as bills begin to mount and they need help NOW. That's where Maggie's Hope comes in. Their mission is to reach out to those families and help them fund the un-funded co-pays, alternative treatments and access to special dietary solutions. These children need support TODAY. We don't have time to wait. Families need help now. Your Karma Yoga Day donation will go into a fund that families in need can apply for on a case by case basis.

Bishnu Charan Ghosh Cup

BishnuCharanGoshCup2011Flyer

The Bishnu Ghosh Cup is an international yoga asana championship held in honor of yogi Bishnu Charan Ghosh. In this event each participant has 3 minutes to demonstrate 7 yoga asanas before a panel of judges. There are 5 asanas that each participant is required to perform and 2 asanas that each participant chooses; the asanas used are all from the vast body of Hatha yoga, derived from the Patanjali Yoga Sutras. The participants are judged on their poise, flexibility, strength, execution of the stated asans and overall presentation.

Although they are an old tradition in India, yoga asana championships began in the United States in 2003. Since their inception in the USA they have stirred up a heated controversy within the American yoga community. Nonetheless, yoga championships are gaining popularity and 2011 will mark the 8th International Ghosh Cup event. The yoga asana championships happen on a regional, national and international level in both adult and youth divisions. They are a celebration of conditioning and inner strength. Our own Texas Regional Championship will take place in October. We hope that anyone with an interest in deepening their practice will share their asanas at the event.

Hello Yogis -Gianna

"It's been almost two months since my extended stay in Austin and ohhhh have I been busy. Training, traveling, playing music, I've really been enjoying myself. Only 18 days until competition time and I'm ready to crack down! Currently on my way to San Francisco to train with the USA Yoga Coach, Mary jarvis, I'll be taking up to 3 classes a day and perfecting my routine in between. Sounds crazy,  but really, its exciting . I am still in disbelief of this opportunity I've been given, I simply want to enjoy myself and demonstrate the strength and peace yoga has provided me. I'd like to extend my thanks to all of PURE Bikram Yoga for all the support. I miss you all deeply.  So much so that I have to stop by for a visit after competition! See you at the end of the month! Much love.
Gianna"

Addiction Fighting Disease

FayStandingBow

I am an addict. I think about it constantly--in the shower, during American Idol, while eating breakfast, and dream of it at night.  If you're reading this, then you probably feel the same way and you know what I'm talking about.

I started Bikram Yoga in 2002, the summer following my freshman year of college (Go Gators!). Earlier that year, I became afflicted with systemic lupus erythematosus, a stress-related autoimmune disease which causes your body to attack itself. I woke up daily with hives and had to pop Benadryl like it was candy.  It was during the hot summer months that I began yoga.  Unlike most people, I don't remember my first Bikram class, but I knew this yoga was special and that it had melded permanently into my life.  I went to class neurotically.  Within the first month, I noticed significant life changes.  My body became a powerhouse and I was able to better combat the turmoil it had been under and the sleepiness from my daily Benadryl overdose.  By the end of the summer, I had never felt so vibrant, despite having this yet-to-be-diagnosed autoimmune disease.  When it was time to go back to college, I was hesitant to leave as there was no Bikram in Gainesville.  I reluctantly returned to school and to a life without my yoga and my yoga family.  Midway through my sophomore year, my hair started to fall out and I became bald except for the crown of my head.  I started having joint pains, swollen fingers/face, and protein in my urine. I had been officially diagnosed with lupus and consequently prescribed autoimmune medications, including oral corticosteroids.  It was then that I realized that a consistent Bikram yoga practice had naturally been the best defense.  The following summer, I returned to a daily Bikram practice and magically saw my health problems lessen. My joints felt less pain and there was less overall swelling in my body.

Practicing yoga for so many years has taught me to be humble, optimistic, and thankful for everything that has come my way.  Most days I get in the hot room and bargain with myself to work hard the entire time.  I usually fail, but even that is okay.  There will always be another yoga class and another chance to "kick some asana."  I know that Bikram yoga has given me an infinite amount of gifts (including the love of my life, who I met in class).  Somewhere along the journey, this yoga became a part of me. It's no longer something I do, but rather a beautiful lifestyle I lead.
