The Devil's in the Details!

Greetings!

Champions know it. Successful coaches and business people know it. When it comes to being the best at anything, success comes down to details. And details are especially important when instigating change.

The need for attention to detail shows up in many aspects of life and around here we're finding that now, more than ever, is the time for details! Change is afoot! Come November we'll be sporting a new look and a new name to keep up with our reach beyond Austin. There's a sneak peak in the right hand column. But right now we've got Cedar Park set to open on November 1st, another GROUPON offering shortly thereafter and the results from the Texas Yoga Asana Championships. Don't miss the details! Get them all in the announcements below along with other BYD members' perspective on Bikram and his lecture in Houston last Sunday.

Bikram says, "I build Bentleys and Rolls-Royces, not Toyotas!" We should have no doubt that there is a purpose behind every detail in the formula that is Bikram Yoga. Nora Jeanne's article addresses the power that comes with heightened personal awareness and allowing change. BYD member Marsha Ungchusri shares her experience with Bikram Yoga, the BYD Challenge and as a competitor in the Texas Yoga Asana Championship.

The healthy food item this month is Coconut Oil. Think it's bad for you because of its saturated fats? You're not alone. This is a case where a little misinformation coupled with a hidden agenda (think soy industry) has led the masses to obesity and away from natural prevention of many common diseases and ailments. Reaping its amazing benefits will require a willingness to change your beliefs.

Enjoy!

Here's what BYD members have to say about Bikram's lecture in Houston:

"It's funny but when I was looking for parking, I saw a man standing in a shiny tailor made suit and I just knew it had to be Bikram. He is such a character! I love his sense of humor and truthfulness. The talk was so engaging I didn't even realize he went over by 30 minutes!"

~ Marsha Ungchusri

"Now because of my direct experience, I fully understand "eventually or in the future..." You just show up, let the yoga do the work and more gets revealed over time."

~ Cole Harmonson

"Honestly I was skeptical that I would get anything from Bikram's lecture as I had heard and read some not so good things about him. When he walked out on stage in his ivory silk suit I was sure they were true. But I was wrong, it was great. Even with him not being able to read the time because there were "too many diamonds" on his watch, I was inspired. His presence is amazing. I left wanting to do more in my life and my yoga practice. I know how yoga has changed my life to this point but now I know there is so much more to do. I am excited to expand my practice with an open mind and can't wait to see where it takes me."

~ Kelly Lott

"It was profound! It was indeed a feeling of being exactly where I was supposed to be at that particular space-time. I know this is true always but it's not recognized as readily as when in the presence of a conduit of truth such as Bikram who, however hyperbolically sounding as it seems, is on the order of what one would imagine Buddha Guatama, Krishnamurti, et. al., were. I do understand and personally believe what I only suspected before hearing him--that he is actualizing his purpose or karma yoga and that his quirkiness, peccadilloes and personality and even what appears to be his superfluous, adversarial and obnoxious comments to the casual observer are actually in line with and indeed necessary for the achievement of the seemingly impossible end of what perhaps may be termed individual god-self-realization."

It took me over three months to work up the nerve to call BYD and ask a million questions about Bikram. Is there any possibility someone as grouchy and out of shape as me could survive the entire class? How will it affect my eczema? What about my bad ankles and knees? Will this really help me lose weight? What if I have an asthma attack? Will this affect my allergies? What about the heat? Am I going to DIE?

I didn't die. Not only did I survive, but I came back the next day. And the next. And before I knew it, I'd completed the 60 Day Challenge with the POSITIVE, and PATIENT support of the teachers and staff at BYD (who answered all my questions then as they do now).

During the 60 Day challenge I went from 31% body fat to 22% body fat and lost 8 pounds. My eczema cleared up. It greatly improved my position on my bike. I CAN TOUCH MY TOES! Oh, and I also gave up the two nasal sprays, two inhalers and 3 pills I was taking daily for my asthma and allergies. I am proud to be drug free! But what is even more important is that I've started to get a grip on my "screw loose mind." I have regained a peace of mind and a sense of focus and determination I haven't known in a long time. I shed the timidity and hesitation I had put on with the weight and reclaimed my LIFE. It even gave me the confidence to sign up for the Yoga Championships and to seek other challenges and experiences that scare me... like trying Bikram's advanced class which rocks, by the way.

Training for the Championships required intense practice and focus. I spent many hours in the studio practicing graceful transitions and many, many backbends. I was one of the last contestants to perform at the Championships. When I walked on stage the cheers from the audience overwhelmed me. I gave the best I had that day, in that moment, on that stage. It was awesome. So what if I can barely bend my elbows in standing head to knee? I can lock my knee! I have come to learn that the yoga is not about the postures, but the body. The expression of the posture is just where your body is at that moment in time and I choose to celebrate it!

Like life, however, my yoga practice definitely ebbs and flows. Since the Championships, I've struggled to find the balance between my life and an immense increase in expectations and stress at work where I teach 8th grade science in a Title I Middle School in AISD. Some weeks I manage to take four classes at BYD, some weeks just one or two. Some classes I rock out and some I lie there and just breathe as I try to let go of the baggage I pick up from the students at school. Some of it is heavy stuff: teenage pregnancy, drugs, gangs, home violence, poverty, abuse...

But even if I am still pulling over 60 hours a week at work, I know when January rolls around I will sign up for the 60 Day Challenge again. I love the Challenge because it gives me no choice. And that is the best choice. Just go!
Coconut Oil
Before I list all the amazing benefits of coconut oil, we'll first need to clear up misconceptions about saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. We've been told for decades that saturated fats are bad for you but it's not necessarily the level of saturation that determines an oil's or fat's health benefits. It's important to note that unsaturated fats (oils) are vulnerable to oxidation and free radical formation causing the oil to become toxic, whereas saturated fats are not. The hydrogenation process used to solidify an oil creates trans fats which our bodies are unable to process and we all know by now to avoid trans fats. The more processed an oil and the longer it's been stored and exposed to light, the more likely it is toxic to your body.
Coconut oil is comprised of 48% lauric acid, 7% capric acid and 8% caprylic acid which are medium chain fatty acids and processed differently from the long chain fatty acids found in most vegetable oils and meat fats. MCFAs go directly to the liver where they are converted to energy and are available for immediate use without raising the blood sugar level. They stimulate metabolism and will help you to feel satiated and less hungry.

Here is a sampling of ailments and conditions that coconut oil can help:
  • Prevents heart disease, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, stroke and diabetes.
  • Supports the development of strong bones and teeth and protects against osteoporosis.
  • Kills viruses that cause mononucleosis, influenza, hepatitis C, measles, herpes, AIDS and other illnesses.
  • Protects the body from breast, colon and other cancers.
  • Prevents premature aging, degenerative disease, liver disease and damaging effects of UV radiation from the sun such as wrinkles, sagging skin and age spots.
  • Kills bacteria that cause pneumonia, earache, throat infections, urinary tract infections, and fungi and yeast that cause jock itch, athlete's foot and diaper rash.
  • Reduces symptoms associated with psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis and relieves pain and irritation caused by hemorrhoids.
  • Reduces severity of problems associated with malabsorption syndrome and cystic fibrosis and relieves symptoms associated with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and stomach ulcers.
Coconut oil does not break down even when heated to very high temperatures so simply switching to using virgin coconut oil for all your cooking needs in place of processed vegetable oils will promote weight loss and provide the benefits listed above and more!

Mardy and Jeff were in Ethiopia in September with A Glimmer of Hope Foundation and were able to see the actual water well dug using the money raised by BYD members in BYD Austin's 60 Class Challenge at the beginning of this year. Mardy will be sharing how incredibly rewarding it was to see the dramatic difference this well makes in the community's daily life in next month's newsletter.

Meanwhile, stay tuned for details come the end of this month and the beginning of next. Our new name and look, Cedar Park opening for business and the next GROUPON offering... Get ready!

Happy Halloween!

Change is Good!
by Nora Jeanne Welsh

Change is good! As they say, the only constant in life is change. But just because it's good doesn't always mean it's easy. The times in which we struggle and suffer the most are the times in which we resist change. In fact, all suffering is the result of resistance. We lack the faith that everything will work out in the long run so we resist. While we may be very clear in knowing that our current circumstances are not satisfactory or far from our ideal, we're afraid to allow the change that creates the space for the better circumstances to materialize. We have two choices, we either stay stuck in our struggles or we stop resisting and allow change. This is where Bikram Yoga comes in.

Bikram Yoga is all about transformation. Bikram created this brilliant formula to facilitate change in people's lives, to heal their bodies and their minds. The class was perfected over time and has remained unchanged now for decades. There is not a single element of the Bikram formula that hasn't been thought out, analyzed and scrutinized by Bikram and others. The exact sequence of 26 postures and two breathing exercises in which each prepares the body for what comes next, two sets of virtually every posture allowing your body to open up in the first set and go deeper in the second set, the heat, the mirror, the power of the group energy responding to the instructions from the teacher, all followed by the complete relaxation of final savasana--it's perfect.

To leave out any single ingredient from the Bikram formula only weakens its potency. "If it's not broken, don't fix it!" Bikram says. Some people might think that doing the same thing every time would get boring but when you tune into the details you'll find that there's an infinite number of nuances to discover about your body in the postures. It's a common occurrence for students' practices to plateau after six months to a year of practicing. Bikram says that's because they've done the yoga so many times that they begin to think they know all there is to know and stop listening to and incorporating the details. At the same time, their mind begins to wander and thus ends the meditation and mental benefits of the class.

Despite the obvious physical workout, Bikram stresses that the biggest benefits we reap from the practice are mental. We can't help but develop our patience, concentration, determination, discipline and faith. All five of these mental attributes are crucial to being truly successful in life.

When I think back to my very first Bikram class there are a few things that stand out in my memory. I was on a retreat in the desert outside of Palm Springs and had never done any kind of yoga. I drove with friends, Bikram aficionados, 40 minutes to get to a yoga studio in Palm Desert where they offered a Bikram class only three times a week. The teacher was very fit with well defined muscles, the kind of body I used to have and wanted once again. She told us what to do and we did it-no option! It was the most difficult workout ever. I'd worked my entire body and someone was telling me exactly what to do at every moment, personally challenging me. I had just enough time in between the postures to recoup before we did it again. I remember a gentle tap on my shoulder as she told the entire class to relax the shoulders during the beginning breathing exercise. I remember her pointing to my bent knee while I was kicking out in standing head to knee as she told everyone to lock the knee. Her physique, confidence and presence were like a promise that if I just stuck to the formula I could look and be like her.

The timing for this class was pivotal. Two years prior I remember consciously acknowledging that I wanted to feel and look the way I did in high school. Back then I had been a very competitive athlete in top physical fitness and with that had enjoyed a very strong sense of self and personal power. The demands of life, college, career all whittled away at this over time. On this retreat we'd looked at what was working in our lives and what needed to change. It was very clear that the biggest piece missing for me was my physical fitness. I know I work best under pressure and to make up for almost 20 years of physical negligence would take a boot camp experience to truly get back on track with the proper routine and regimen that could promise results. I was in the Bikram haze after class and new realizations were slowly occurring to me. The class was amazing, best full body workout ever and a meditation at the same time. I saw that this yoga could be the key to my physical wellbeing as long I had the patience and dedication to come back day after day. On the drive back to the retreat space after class my friends asked me if I'd liked the class. I obviously said I did and their response was, "Well, if you really liked it maybe you should go to the teacher training where they make you do it twice a day for 9 weeks." The sense of total certainty hit me. It felt as if the universe delivered the solution to my dilemma. My path was clear. Scary but clear.

A month later (yes, it took me a month!) I found the Bikram studio only five minutes from my home and began my journey to health. Six months after that I was at Bikram Yoga Teacher Training. I was lucky to make it to class three times a week in the beginning and frankly don't know if I could have handled any more than that. Each class wiped me out. I'd do a class at 9:00 in the morning and struggled to get myself together enough to make it to see my clients by 1:00 in the afternoon. I learned early on that I had to change my diet to include more meat so that I'd have more strength in class and be able to recover more quickly afterwards. I began to crave different foods and without realizing it started eliminating junk foods. Slowly but surely, things were falling into place and boy was I feeling great in the process!

Bikram Yoga has been a tremendous facilitator for change in my life and provided the tools necessary to successfully navigate changes. The class has taught me to tune into details and feel for what's happening both in my body and around me at the same time. I've developed the ability to concentrate on one thing and ignore distractions that keep me from my purpose. I've garnered the determination and discipline to see my vision through to the end. I've learned to appreciate that there are times when I need to struggle and there are times when I need to surrender; one follows the other just as the tides ebb and flow. I've learned to go with the flow, to be patient with life and wait for the right time to instigate changes. I've learned to trust that the universe will make clear to me, one way or another, when that right time is. I have faith that I will achieve my vision in time even though I may not like what I'm going through in that particular moment.

I send out many thanks to my first teacher, even though I've never taken another class from her and don't even know her name, for the wonderful introduction to Bikram Yoga and providing the inspiration that's gotten me to where I am today.
