BYD Austin
Appreciating All
Greetings!

April starts with Passover and the Good Friday/Easter weekend and also hosts Earth Day on the 22nd. Since our newsletter doesn't come out until mid-month we also look to early May which brings us Cinco de Mayo and Mother's Day. All of these holidays urge reflection on and appreciation for the events and people of our past that have laid the groundwork for where we are now.

The energy of appreciation is much more powerful than we realize. Read Nora Jeanne's article in the right hand column to find out how. Then tap into the power of appreciation and direct it towards every aspect of your life and watch it transform. Not quite sure how? We'll provide a starter for you this week with our Karma Class on Friday, April 16th, in honor of Jason Winn, one of Bikram's most senior teachers who's done so much to spread the yoga and personally inspire people all over the world including right here at BYD Austin to excel to their highest potential in both the beginning and advanced postures. Read below for more information about the class and Jason.

Next month Mother's Day falls on May 9th and nothing's better to appreciate than mother, whether your own, one you know, yourself as mom or mother Earth. BYD member, Laura Pastor gets this and has chosen to combine it with her appreciation for the yoga to host a mothers only class on Mother's Day with a special gift for all attendng. Any mother can attend free of charge! You can read her story in the testimonial section below.

Be sure to read the announcements section as well for more details on these event and teacher news (one's off for a year long stint in India). We chose parsley as the healthy food item for this month as it is so often overlooked and treated simply as a garnish.

Enjoy!

Laura Pastor
Laura Pastor with boysYes, I'm hosting another hot mama's day party because I think it is such fun energy to practice yoga with my friends who are mothers. I have many single friends and friends who are married without kids, but there is a very special bond between moms. Mother's Day is always exceptionally meaningful for all of us! It is really nice to be able to spend most of the day with the family and then get away and celebrate our individual selves, too. It is so important to remember that first and foremost we are individuals and secondly we are mothers. Yoga helps us remember this. It is such a powerful way to meditate and connect our minds and bodies and share in a group connection at the same time. I, in particular, find solace in spending time alone because my three boys, two age 6 and one age 9, are really loud and have a lot of energy. Yoga is the one time of the day where some one else tells me what to do and when to do it. I completely get in a zone and meditate and I love it!

I started my practice when my twins were 6 months old. I got up, fed them and put them in their little chairs all propped up and then attended the 6:00 a.m. yoga class just down the street. I had only attended one or two yoga classes before in my life. But after that first Bikram class, I was hooked. I loved how the heat helped my body open up and stretch. I mainly did it for the stretching and physical benefits initially, but now, I must say, it is mainly for the spiritual and mental benefits. I feel clear and centered after my yoga practice.

One of my favorite things to give to friends is the gift of a yoga class. If a friend has never gone, I like to practice with her so she is comfortable. I realize some people just do not like the heat, but most of the friends that I have brought to yoga have taken to it. They may just attend a few times a month, but they still really enjoy it when they go. Giving a gift like yoga is, to me, the ultimate gift because it is truly giving them something that now they start giving themselves. It helps them grow physically, mentally and spiritually and this is clearly not something I can do for them! However, if I can even have a little part in helping them get started, that warms my heart.

So, here's to warming hearts, minds and bodies!!! I hope all of you mothers out there will come join me and other mothers in the special mothers only class on Mother's Day at 11:00 a.m. in the Downtown studio. Happy Hot Mother's Day!!!!!!!!!!!

Parsley
parsleyYes, it makes that dish so much more attractive but please don't discard it! Instead start adding it as one more green in your spring mix salad. Add it to your potato salad, chicken salad and about any dish you want. Oh yes, let me tell you why!

Parsley is an excellent source of vitamin A, vitamin C (more than in citrus fruits) and vitamin K. It's got folate (folic acid), beta carotene, vitamin B12, chlorophyll, fluorine, calcium, iron, potassium and fiber to mention some of the most important nutrients. It also contains very powerfully healthy volatile oil components and flavonoids.

When you look to the nutritional benefits of foods, it's very important to take into consideration the source of the nutrients listed. Synthetic, man made, chemicals produced in laboratories are not exactly the same as those found in nature and can produce different effects in the body. Some nutrients require the presence of another in order for the body to be able to absorb it, i.e. iron cannot be absorbed without vitamin C. Folate and folic acid (the synthetic version of folate) are not the same. Same with fluorine and fluoride and it takes fluorine and calcium both to create hard, strong teeth. What's in that toothpaste you use?

With so many nutrients and anti-oxidants present, parsley helps to fight all kinds of diseases and keeps the body's systems functioning optimally. It's good for your heart, blood, blood vessels, liver, spleen, kidneys, adrenals and digestion. It offers protection against tumor formation in the lungs and helps to prevent rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, bad breath, anemia, menstrual irregularity and helps to neutralize some carcinogens. It is somewhat anti-bacterial and anti-fungal and is good to keep your ears and sinuses clear and healthy.

Don't think the only or best way to eat parsley is fresh. Cooking it can nearly double the vitamin K content and vitamin K is necessary for healthy bones.

Both types of parsley, Italian (flat leaf) and curly leaf, have these same benefits. The Italian parsley is less bitter and perhaps slightly more nutritious. In either case, learn to love that garnish on your plate and know you're doing your body good when you eat it. Enjoy!
Just so you know, all of us at BYD Austin recognize that the energy you and all the other members and employees of BYD Austin contribute is what makes our community so special. Every person adds something unique to what we all have the pleasure of enjoying. Thank you!

Here's to finding appreciation for all aspects of your life!

Sincerely,

The Yoga Team
BYD Austin

The Benefits of Appreciation
The Benefits of Appreciation
by Nora Jeanne Welsh

Appreciation is such a huge topic I hardly know where to start! I personally have so many things that I am full of appreciation for; things I get to look at and experience right now in my everyday life and things from my past and times long ago that still have an impact on my life as I live it today.

This year, the month of April started with Passover and Easter and also celebrates Earth Day on the 22nd. I always look to the beginning of the next month as well since this doesn't come out until midmonth. The beginning of May brings us Mother's Day on the 9th and I just learned of Teacher Appreciation Day which falls on the 4th. How appropriate for our theme this month of appreciation! Especially since we're hosting our first ever Karma Class in celebration of senior Bikram teacher Jason Winn. Somehow things always seem to fall into place when we least expect it!

So often our holidays commemorate tragic times or events. But they also teach us to look for the silver lining in the darkness--it's always there though sometimes we have to look a little deeper and give it time to reveal itself.

Have you ever noticed how the pleasure of experiencing the good things is only satisfying for a short period of time. Yes, it's nice but it's not long before we wonder what comes next? We can never stand still for long and remain satisfied. Evolution, meaning growth and change, is the real source of satisfaction and joy in life.

A month or so ago my host brother, David Trood, from back when I was an exchange student in Australia for the second semester of my senior year of high school found me on Facebook (I appreciate Facebook!). The last time I saw him was 25 years ago when I'd gone back to Australia for his sister's wedding. He is now a renowned photographer who lives in Copenhagen, Denmark and has just published a book, At Any Given Moment, chronicling his life as a photographer and his quest to find the source of his creativity. It starts when he was 13, only a couple years before I met him, and follows his path through working for the big Australian city newspapers and then on to backpacking through Indonesia, Thailand, Nepal, India, back to Australia, moving to Denmark in pursuit of the lover he'd met in Thailand and his subsequent career and family developments.

I have always been a huge fan of traveling. In traveling we allow ourselves to experience so much more of life. We may not know exactly what we are stepping into but the one thing that is for sure is that we will see and experience something new. We usually intend to experience something pleasing, but it could very well be something horrifying instead. It's hard to appreciate the terrible things that happen as we are in the midst of them, but the bigger the contrast the more it will ultimately effect how we see and live our life moving forward. We get a very clear understanding of what we do not want to experience anymore and come away with greater clarity about what it is that we do want.

I was only in Australia for a short period of time, four months maybe, but the world I stepped into down there could not have been more opposite of my world back at home. I gained somewhere between 25 and 30 pounds, mostly in the first two months when I was living in the dorms at the all girls Church of England school I attended. Not only was the food unhealthful, but I was very depressed.

While I have wonderful memories of my time down under, there were some that were not so great and all of those took place at the school. The strongest memory I have from my time there was an intense feeling of depression that hit me like a wave the moment my foot hit the school grounds as I stepped off the bus after a few days away from the school on a field trip to Sydney. The time away had given me the space to experience the contrast of life there and life away from there and it was dramatic! That feeling was so powerful that I could not deny it and turned immediately to David's sister Barbara (she'd lived with me and my family in San Diego only months earlier) to ask that her family please let me come live with them. She'd hesitated a moment and tried to explain that they were no longer living in a normal house but my desperation was evident. She checked with her father that night and the next day I moved into the woolshed with them where they were temporarily living while her father was building their new home. A woolshed is where they shear the sheep on a station (ranch) in Australia. We were essentially camping out though we had a roof over our heads. Never-the-less, I knew the relief of being away from that school environment was crucial to my wellbeing, even if it was only for a portion of the day and night.

All of the positive memories came from my time with the Trood family and living their life that was out in the country and very much in touch with nature. His mother was the first to introduce me to astrology, the power of our visions and thoughts, the healing qualities of herbs and the benefits of tuning in to nature and our own inner being. In the big picture of my life, seeds were planted in those few months in Australia 28 years ago that took almost two decades to begin blossoming into the life I am now living.

Anyone or anything can be our teacher. Every experience we have opens a new perspective from which we can view life. We learn and grow from contrast. It's worthwhile that we learn to appreciate the seemingly negative experiences as they will ultimately be the source of the new and improved version of the life we create for ourselves.

I am incredibly grateful that the Trood family was willing to take me in. They helped turn those few months in Australia from what could have been a negative experience into a very positive one. While I wouldn't say that I am grateful for the time I spent at the school, I am very appreciative of the contrast it provided that helped me to have a clearer understanding of what is important in my life. All of this played a huge role in me becoming who I am today.

With every situation I encounter, I realize that I can choose to focus on the positive aspects or the negative aspects. I know now that whatever it is that I focus on will become more dominant in my experience. I do my best to focus on the positives and find reasons to appreciate the negatives. It's not always easy and sometimes it takes longer than I'd like, but I know the benefit is there. Every time I take time to appreciate something I can feel my energy shift in a positive direction and ease come over me.

Everywhere I look in life I can find things to appreciate:  the sunshine, the clouds, the rain, the beautiful spring flowers in blossom all around us, delicious, healthy food that is so easy to find here in Austin. I appreciate that I once again have a healthy and strong body thanks to Bikram Yoga--while I lost those 30 pounds in only few months before I headed off to college in the fall of 1982, it wasn't until I started practicing Bikram Yoga in 2001 that I began to once again feel truly healthy and strong and a return to the sense of personal power that I'd first gone to Australia with.

I appreciate Bikram for being strong enough to change the way that yoga was traditionally taught as he developed his yoga class. I'd like to find more ways that I can thank Jason Winn and the other senior teachers of Bikram Yoga who shared their devotion and passion for the yoga with me and every other student and teacher they've touched. I appreciate my mother (and you, too, Dad) for her unconditional love and feel it all over again every time I see that from the other mothers I come across.

No matter what I allow myself to appreciate, whether it's a pen working well as I write, the smile or frown on someone else's face, the piece of peppermint candy waiting in a bowl for me to have after class, I can always feel my heart opening and love flowing through me. It makes me smile inside and sometimes outwardly. I can't help but want to share it with others.

Here's an exercise you can try:  the next time you are frustrated with something (maybe your teenager or job or car), look for the positive qualities and actually write them down, review this list and continue to add to it and notice the difference in how you feel when you focus on the positive attributes. Remember, your attention is the seat of your power. Whatever you focus your attention on, you give your power to and you will experience more of it. You get to choose what you focus your attention on.

The vibration of appreciation is as high as that of love. It is pure, positive energy and is contagious. You cannot stand next to someone who is full of appreciation and not feel some yourself. As you wake up each morning, take a few moments to appreciate something, anything, and allow that to set the energy for the rest of your day.

Enjoy the blessings of appreciation!
