Honorary Doctorate for Our Friend Emily Meschter

Emily Meschter, philanthropist and education activist, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at the Graduate Commencement ceremony last Friday.
As both a volunteer and philanthropist, she has supported programs in early, elementary, and higher education, and our community has benefited greatly from her selflessness. She began her philanthropy in Tucson in 1994, when she wanted to support a grade level of students in a school serving a low-income community by funding the students' post-secondary education.
Her "I Have a Dream" program included 71 third-graders at Laguna Elementary School who were promised a full four-year college scholarship (tuition, housing, and books) upon successful completion of high school. Emily realized that if this dream were to be fulfilled, these students would need additional support along the way and, therefore, funded an infrastructure that included after-school tutoring and counseling throughout all their years in school.
To date, 30 students of the original group successfully completed college degrees, and three became teachers. She still is funding some of the students as they pursue master's degrees, and she has assisted some graduates in starting businesses. Her philanthropy doesn't end there. Emily provided financial support for an early childhood learning center, fondly known as Emily's Place, by donating $200,000 of her own funds and fundraising an additional $100,000. She also helped the college secure a grant from the Helios Education Foundation for $2 million to develop innovative teacher education curriculum.
She has devoted herself to other programs, as well, such as the Rodel Foundation's Exemplary Teacher Program and Project SOAR. More recently, she was one of the major donors to help establish the first Paul L. Lindsey & Kathy J. Alexander Dean's Chair in the college. We held a small gathering in the WOW library to recognize her commitment to education.
Thank you for everything you do, Emily!
