Why take the leap?

Leap Year Proposal

We're about to gain an extra day on Wednesday, February 29. Leap years are needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the earth's revolutions around the sun.

It takes the earth approximately 365.242199 days (a tropical year) to circle once around the sun. However, the Gregorian calendar has only 365 days in a year, so if we didn't add a day on February 29 nearly every four years, we would lose almost six hours off our calendar every year. After only 100 years, our calendar would be off by approximately 24 days!

According to Irish legend, or possibly history, St. Bridget struck a deal with St. Patrick to allow women to propose to men every four years. This is believed to have been introduced to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar way to how Leap Day balances the calendar.

Now, it's time to leap into this month's Education E-News

UA athletes share fun and exercise with our "little Wildcats"

Wildcat School students from the first through fourth grades learned about healthy and fun exercise during the second annual Track and Field Day 2012, hosted by the UA Track and Field Team. More than 75 UA athletes taught our "little Wildcats" about different track and field events. The children had a wonderful day, full of fresh air and exercise. They were so enthusiastic, they illustrated the day on thank-you notes. Just take a look at some of these adorable letters from the students, then look at them having fun!

Ben's Bells ready to install!

In December, we told you about the large mosaic we've been working on for the east lobby of the College of Education building. The mosaic will be part of the Ben's Bells Kindness Corridor. The Kindness Corridor is a series of kindness-themed mosaic art and murals created by local artists, students, and community members.

Now, we can add College of Education faculty, staff, and student volunteers to that list. During the last few weeks, we've been cutting and painting tiles and collecting materials in preparation for the installation at the end of March. Enjoy these photos of the process and, next time, we'll have photos of the completed project.

Special thanks to all our College of Education project volunteers!
