Disability & Psychoeducational Studies

baumanProfessor Sheri Bauman has been featured in television news stories about her research in bullying and her large-scale, three-year study, thanks to a $350,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. Here's one of the stories from KVOA, Tucson's NBC affiliate.

Congratulations also are in order as she was just promoted from associate professor to professor.

Associate Professor of Practice L. Penny Rosenblum just returned from a trip to the Middle East, where she presented at the Doha Early Intervention Conference for Children with Visual Impairments or Multiple Impairments. She did four sessions: Braille literacy, print literacy, activities of daily living, and a workshop on social skills. She was one of five presenters from the United States. Here's more about the conference.

She also spoke at Alhosn University in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates about instructional strategies for students with visual impairments in the general education classroom.

Educational Policy Studies & Practice

regina deil-amenrios-aguilarKudos to both Associate Professor Regina Deil-Amen (right) and Assistant Professor Cecilia Rios-Aguilar for their joint success in receiving a $735,442 grant from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Getting Connected: Harnessing the Power of Social Media Technology to Enhance Community College Student Success will explore the relevance of social media technology and its use across postsecondary institutions.

David Baker was named a 2011 Up & Comer from Inside Tucson Business. This EPSP graduate has been a teacher and a principal, and he's now an associate superintendent in the Flowing Wells Unified School District.

Associate Dean and Professor Jeffrey F. Milem along with student Manuel S. Gonzalez Canche and recent doctoral graduate Brendan Cantwell presented a poster at the American Educational Research Association conference. The poster, The Effects of Campus Climate on Collaborative Learning in Medical Education: A Structural Equation Model, received an honorable mention. There were more than 50 posters, and theirs was ranked second. Reviewers said, "Your poster was very informative and easy to follow. You did a great job conveying your findings to the poster audience."

Jaime Carbajal Jr., who just received his master's degree, is the recipient of two awards: the UA Hispanic Alumni Outstanding Graduate Student Award and the Outstanding Graduate Student Leader Award from UA Accolades.

Teaching, Learning & Sociocultural Studies

luis mollProfessor Luis C. Moll received the Palmer O. Johnson Memorial Award from the American Educational Research Association. The award represents the highest quality of academic scholarship published in one of three AERA peer-reviewed journals during the 2010 volume year. His article, "Mobilizing Culture, Language, and Educational Practices: Fulfilling the Promises of Mendez and Brown," was published in Educational Researcher. Focusing on educational equity, Moll documents the 1946 Mendez v. Westminster case, a precursor to Brown v. Board of Education. He includes the sociocultural context of the case and educational conditions of the Latino community at the time, and then uses his analysis of the case as a backdrop to speak to the need for broad alliances.

wymanAssociate Professor Leisy Wyman was recently awarded tenure and promotion from assistant professor.
