Celebrating 5 years of reaching out!

______________________________________

For 20 years now, September has been designated as National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month.  This year, more than ever before, we need to call attention to the hope of recovery.   DARS and Outreach Services has seen a marked increase in the number of calls and consultation requests we receive from those asking for help.  People are turning or returning to drugs and alcohol more than ever.  Lost jobs, lost retirement plans, lost hopes and dreams, and worry about the economy are just a few of the reasons for these increased needs.  Outreach Services / DARS is reaching out and working hard to provide resources to the addicts and their family members.  For our efforts and with our recourses, we are able to provide safe appropriate treatment for them, "a place of recovery, hope and healing."

Dual Diagnosis
People who suffer with serious mental illness and substance abuse face an uphill struggle as they attempt to deal with two serious illnesses.  Mental health services quite often are not prepared to deal with substance abuse and the individual bounces back and forth between services for mental illness and substance abuse.  Research shows that as much as 50% of the mentally ill population also has a substance abuse problem.  It is very important for people with a dual diagnosis of mental illness and substance abuse to receive treatment for both illnesses at the same time. Traditional drug treatment programs are not recommended for people who are also mentally ill.  They can increase levels of stress and make symptoms worse or cause a relapse.  Outreach Services intake specialists make certain to find out if the client is dealing with mental illness along with their substance abuse addiction.  We share with them the importance of finding the right program for their special needs.

Meet Our Newest Employee
Outreach Services / DARS is happy to announce the addition of Jeanne Pierce to our intake staff.  Jeanne comes to us with a strong background in customer service learned while working in the hospitality industry.  She has also volunteered for the past five years for NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) and is certified as a teacher for their Family to Family and Peer to Peer programs, and as a support group facilitator.  NAMI is the foremost national advocacy organization for persons with brain disorders that cause mental illness, and their families.  NAMI's free programs are a wonderful aftercare addition for your clients who live with mental illness, or have a mentally ill family member.  For more information contact jeanne@outreachservices.us  Jeanne brings a special ability to relate to clients and family members dealing with the double edged sword of mental illness and substance abuse.

DARS/Outreach Services on the Road
We will take part in an all day fundraiser for NAMI at the San Bernardino Hilton Hotel in November.  65% of the proceeds from the day's event will go to develop transitional housing for the mentally ill in San Jacinto and the rest will be shared by the NAMI chapters in San Bernardino, Cathedral City, Corona and Riverside for resource development.  Please contact us if you have events in your area that you'd like us to be a part of.  Feel free to call 866-418-1397 ext. 801 or email events@outreachservices.us for more information.
