Beetle Cat No. 2081
Concordia Co., Inc., South Dartmouth, MA
Estate of Patricia D. Stephanoff

The Beetle Cat is a 12-foot-4-inch (3.76 m) gaff-rigged catboat first built in 1920 in New Bedford, Massachusetts by members of the Beetle family. During World War II, all production of the Beetle Cat was suspended. After the war, Beetle sold the rights to the Concordia Company in South Dartmouth, MA, where production resumed under Master Builder, Leo J. Telesmanick.

The craft is a wooden class boat used for racing purposes, is a beach cruiser and family sailer. (It can be launched from a sand beach

as well as from a dock or boathouse lift.)

Famous owners have included Jacqueline Onassis, who had one shipped to Greece in 1969 for John F. Kennedy Jr. and Caroline Kennedy to learn sailing in, Senator John Kerry, Steven Spielberg and Calvin Klein.

The best known fleet of Beetle Cats are on Nantucket.  In 1925 the Nantucket Yacht Club chose the design for its fleet; with the different colored sails, it became known as the "Rainbow Fleet."

AMERICAN DINERS  Edward Hopper noticed, and so did Rockwell.  A uniquely American phenomenon, the earliest diners were established outside factories, which operated 24 hours a day.  They quickly became an essential part of urban culture, alongside bars and nightclubs; their late night patrons rubbing elbows with night shift workers, couples savoring those last few minutes together before heading home, little boy adventurers conversing with policemen. Strongholds of optimism, American diners offered the hopeful a place in time from which to anticipate the future.

Watercolor on Paper "Squam Head with Sankaty Lighthouse in the Distance"

signed lower left,  "C. Robert Perrin, A.W.S."

18 in. x 28 in.

Born in Medfield, Massachusetts; a graduate of the Art Institute of Boston, Perrin first painted on Nantucket in 1946. His studio on Old South Wharf evolved to become the first active gallery on the wharf in 1956, and by 1966 he'd moved permanently to Washington Street where he established a summer tradition of Wednesday evening demonstrations of his watercolor technique. Originally an illustrator by trade,

C. Robert Perrin made use of his inventive nature to illustrate Island children's books (Remember Whopper or Nancy Tucket?) and some of the first posters employed to market the island.  As reported in American Artist magazine in 1959, Perrin converted a VW bus into a plein air studio on wheels. The artist favored Payne's Gray for his watercolors of puddles, fog imagery and ghosts; and when the premier maker

of watercolors announced it was discontinuing the color, Perrin lobbied successfully for its continuation. He remained active in the arts community on Nantucket for

5 decades.  ~ adapted from Robert Frazier's Nantucket Arts Buzz

C. Robert Perrin's work has been documented in "Who's Who in American Art," "Who's Who in the East," and "Who's Who in the Arts & Antiques."

Nantucket Sleigh Ride Folk Art Carving in Original Paint

Length 56 in.

NOTE: A Nantucket sleighride was a term used by Nantucket whalemen to describe what occurs immediately following the harpooning of a whale. The whale, realizing it had been harpooned, would attempt to flee and thus drag the whaleboat along with it. The speed of the "sleigh ride" would vary depending on the species of the whale. The Sperm Whale brought the most thrill, reaching speeds of 23 mph. The  sailors' ride would last until the whale became exhausted. At that point, the sailors would slaughter it and harvest its oil.
