1959 Morris Minor Traveller Blue Woody.

The "Moggie"
"Planned as the Morris Mosquito, a reference to the sophisticated de Havilland warplane and a reminder that the Minor was conceived in an austere age of  rationing and privation, relieved only by a mood of wary and bruised post-war optimism. ...It was a well-meant antidote to misery - even if the first versions did not have a heater - we love the Morris Minor
and the dreamworld it represents."
THE TELEGRAPH; The Morris Minor: A British Miracle, January 2011,
Stephen Bayley

ROWE AMI "Compact Disk" Juke Box, Model: CD-RN

The term "jukebox" came into use in the United States around 1940, apparently derived from the familiar "juke joint", derived from the Gullah word "juke" or "joog" meaning disorderly, rowdy, or wicked.

Bally Midway Evel Knievel Pinball Machine
Bally MFG Co. 1977

"An excellent game with all of the standards from the late 1970s:
targets, spinners, double bonus, extra balls and specials."

Bally Manufacturing Co. released 837 machines under this trade name,

starting in 1931.

A telling clip from Knievel's website:
"Of all the superheroic characters that have appeared on the pages of Marvel and DC comics, there is only one, real life superhero: Evel Knievel.
And the legend lives on."

Remarkable, you say?

Vintage "Tilt-A-Whirl" Carnival Ride Basket Seat

"Manufactured by Sellner Manufacturing of Faribault, Minnesota.

The ride is commonly known for making riders experience nausea.
The Tilt-a-Whirl is a platform-type ride, consisting of seven freely-spinning cars that hold four (sometimes three) riders each, which are attached at fixed pivot points on a rotating platform. As the platform revolves, parts of the platform are raised and lowered, and the resulting centrifugal and gravitational forces on the cars cause them to spin in different directions and at variable speeds. The weight of passengers in these cars may intensify or dampen the spinning motion of the cars, adding to the unpredictable nature of the motion. Mathematicians call this unpredictable nature chaotic motion.
Physicists Bret M. Huggard and Richard L. Kautz came up with a mathematical equation that approximates the motion of the Tilt-A-Whirl[2]. Although it was without knowledge of chaos theory that Herbert Sellner invented the ride, in his patent text he clearly demonstrates an appreciation of chaos -- "A further object is to provide amusement apparatus wherein the riders will be moved in general through an orbit and will unexpectedly swing, snap from side to side or rotate without in any way being able to figure what movement may next take place in the car." Wikipedia

The oldest currently operating Tilt-A-Whirl is a 1927 model,

still traveling with Tom Evans United Shows in the midwest.

Between 600 and 700 Tilt-A-Whirls are still in operation.

Nantucket
Lightship and Friendship
Baskets

~

In 1856, the state of Massachusetts commissioned lightships to provide light to passing ships around the dangerous shoals of Nantucket.  With little to do during the day, the crew turned to weaving rattan baskets to pass the time.  They found that the baskets had many utilitarian uses and were becoming popular with visitors.  No longer made on lightships, we still value each, as a Nantucket Lightship Basket.  Collectors and historians generally agree that some of the finest baskets were made between 1870 - 1890 aboard lightships such as the New South Shoal #1 and the Cross Rip.

Some basket weavers of this era were: Captain Davis Hall, Captain Andrew Sandsbury, Roland Folger, Thomas W. Barrallay, William D. Appleton, George W. Ray, Charles F. Ray, Joe Fisher, Charlie Sylvia, SB Raymond and Isaac Hamblin.  Although many of these men put labels on their work,
most have not withstood time.

The popularization of [covered Lightship Baskets used as] ladies handbags  occurred in the late 1940s due to the ingenuity of Jos Formoso Reyes, who with the help of Charlie Sayle, added decorative tops with ivory carving.  Reyes broke from tradition and called these Friendship Baskets because to him, the basket symbolized a bond with Nantucket and was instantly recognized as a reminder of this special place.  It was soon a common tradition for a girl to receive a Friendship Basket upon graduating Nantucket High School,  when Friendship Baskets cost $20 - $35.

Some weavers during this time were: Jos Reyes (influenced by Mitchy Ray), Sherwin Boyer, Stanley Roop, Stephen Gibbs, John Kittila,

John Elder and Paul Whitten.
