understates the potency of a splendid habitat and the inherent vitality of a creative community. As a post-Civil War America righted herself and a growing affluence established a uniquely American lifestyle,
a century and a half of American Artists
observed, evaluated and recorded her living culture.

Known for atmospheric marine and landscape paintings in oil, pastel, watercolor and for black and white drawings, George McCord was central to the second generation of Hudson River School painters.
