During the 1850's Nantucket farmers began cultivating the native cranberries for urban markets in Boston and New York, and in 1859 island farmers produced more than 300 barrels of cranberries.  A farmer would build a soil bank around a swamp at about six inches, sow it with cranberry vines, and then spread it with two inches of sand.
This painting depicts a Cranberry Farm on Milestone Road heading east towards 'Sconset.
 
 Munro's works are included in numerous private collections and exhibitions: Smithsonian Institute, Nantucket Historical Association, American Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum, Piece-Hall Gallery - London, Cahoon Museum of American Art, Secretary of State Clinton, Sir Anthony Hopkins,
and The Beach Boys, to name a few.
